Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Wouldnt an email both be quicker and cheaper than a phone call also a printout of the email is proof that they were contacted about the broken glass wheras a phone call can be denied if nothing is done and a further enquiry is made

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
braz calls for Sustrans to sort out the signing of the NCN, but the responsibility for maintenance including signing lies with the LA (local authority).
spanner suggests email correspondence is effective for dealing with LAs, well it might be in some cases, but my LA frequently ignores emails to the extent that email correspondence is useless.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Spanner could take a broom out and do it himself.
He might find it would stay clear indefinitely.
If it gets glassy again straight away then COUNCIL it.
email sending is not accepted as evidence of delivery.
I have not seen many people sweeping up glass in remote locations but if it is important on your route, then sweep it yourself!

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Cyclist have a right to use all roads except motorways. Helmet wearing is not compulsory. Motorists have a duty to respect these rights and pass safely.
I'd say she wasn't doing anything wrong or particularly dangerous. It may be wise to point out alternative routes, but a telling off sounds a bit harsh.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
thanks to Andy,
Yes of course. The problem was
probably that i was not on a bike myself! It always helps to be part of the fraternity!
I was merely interested to know
why she did not use the cycle track..
The answer would probably have been "I did not know it was one!" because there was no glass on it at all.
She was on a bike; that was the main thing and going about her business.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Mike 6 - thank's for your response - as both are Government financed, why do Sustrans and the LA's not get together to sort out route signing and numbering - they could use their unique 'silvery serpent' language - they might get an e-mail response that way! Now then - if we all e-mailed that dim Tony Blair about the problem, might anything happen? Not unless cycling becomes the latest 'bandwagon' for Tony to jump upon (cc Rugby, Cricket, etc!). And Tony - please don't tell Caborne to do anything - nothing would happen anyway - he's only the Sports Minister!

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
why do Sustrans and the LA's not get together to sort out route signing and numbering -
It is a joint initiative.
The reason Sustrans routes go
through towns is because the District councils
insist on it as their parts of the bargain. The definitive waymarks are paid by the CC, are they not?
Otherwise it would be National byways for everyone.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Braz, I would imagine LAs receive few complaints regarding NCN signing, so spend maintenance cash on other things. The local cyclists care little about signing, they know their way about. Touring cyclists do not complain because they are unlikely to return to that area. Local councillors do not press officials for action because their constituents are not complaining to them.
Maintenance of route signing is just not as straightforward as it might appear.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
All of which goes to show how valuable the work of Sustrans is, at filling the gaps.
Your remarks are astute.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
Nice to have started a conversation! Thank you all for your comments - and ideas - still funny that no-one from Sustrans or a LA has responded so far - do they know of the CTC? And do the cycle anywhere? Another sugestion for long distance route signing - when one is in a 'strange' area - put N,S,W or E after the route number - for those of us who travel light with minimal luggage and therefore do not carry maps - brilliant new sign just north of the Kessock bridge, saying Route 7N - pity that the sign is the last one for about 30 miles! And, and - why are some of the signs that are there almost as big as advertising posters - it must cost a fortune - and, and, why not have self adhesive 'repeaters' to stick on existing hardware - please will you all join my 'save a pole a day' campaign!.

Re:Courting danger or a.... man?
SORRY forgot to add this
if cycle paths are the responsibility of the local council and the broken glass causes damage to your tyres resulting in new ones having to be bought would you have a legal claim against the council( as they have been negligent in their duty to keep the path clean and tidy )for the cost of replacement tyres and tubes?????
Though no doubt their legal eagles would find a way round avoiding paying for new tyres and tubes
