Which budget hybrid to buy?

Post by Remixer »

Hello good people! I need new hybrid bike (halfords) so there is only 3 bikes which I consider 'budget' bikes (and they are at discount now).

1. Carrera Crossfire 2 for £256 now http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/carrera-crossfire-2-mens-hybrid-bike-white

2. Voodoo Marasa for £300 now http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/voodoo-marasa-hybrid-bike

3. Boardman MX sport for £375 now http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/boardman-mx-sport-bike

-last year I had Carrera Crossfire 2 (for 6 months) and I was very satisfied with it, but now I want better bike, but my budget is up to £325-350  and Voodoo Marasa don't have front suspension and Boardman is over budget :x
Is that Boardman worth more money?

Basically, I need bike for work and sometimes for recreation

Thanks!

I would go for the VooDoo Marasa. Based purely on the fact it's the lightest of your 3 choices with reasonable components. The 40mm tyres will give a comfy enough ride notwithstanding the lack of a suspension fork (I used to ride a cheap front SUS fork but changed it out for a rigid fork and didn't really notice much different from a comfort perspective - saying that I didn't really notice the 1.5 kg reduction in weight either!!)

I am not a great lover of disc brakes due to my own ignorance and the associated hassle with finding racks and mudguards to fit properly. However, the Tektro m290's get reasonable reviews.

Why did you have your Crossfire 2 for only 6 months last year?? Was it nicked or did you get bored with it?

Anyhow, that will start the ball rolling for you,

All the best, Simon

I was moving so I couldn't bring Crossfire 2 with me...

I'm thinking should I stretch and buy that Boardman MX sport while it's on offer :?:

I'd get the boardman, actually I'd get the boardman hybrid without suspension and join British cycling and order it via quidco then pick up and use the bc 10 percent discount

That's what I did I have the 2016 hybrid team bike I got in the black Friday sales. Quidco was doing a special cash back offer and bike was reduced, paid 409 all in bargain :)

I fitted 35mm tyres and guards and a rack , great bike for the money

This weekend I'm going to halfords and I think I'll buy that Boardman MX sport because it's on ofer until sunday.

I can't wait for black friday (but that's great), and I want to buy bike in halfords 'cause I'm very close to it.

Yesterday I bought bike cover, gloves and socks (Lidl) 8)

Update: I bought (Boardman MX sport) and first impression is... that it's weird. Seat and grips are very uncomfortable and gears are very difficult to change, maybe I excepted too much, but I remember (last year) my ex Carrera Crossfire 2 - it was somehow easier to handle. Tomorrow I'm planing to cycle much more and I will see, but first impression are not good or problem is in me? (244 pounds)... and I didn't cycle a long time
