I keep records.
Yes, anal I know.
I fitted the pair of the Conti SCs 5th October 2016 at 1,551miles.
I swapped them front/rear 6th February 2017 at 2,133miles.
I fitted a used Conti GP to the front 3rd May at 2,786miles, and put what was the front Conti SC onto the rear.
This was the one that wore out ........... noticed and photographed at 4,034miles.
Therefore it had done a total of 2,483miles ....................... but 582miles on the front where it wouldn't have worn much at all.

On one of my bikes a pair of 4 season conti's lasted over a decade - total milage around 2k but i replaced them due to signs of perishing.
However the replacement 4 season conti's [same model of tyre & size] has rubber tread perish far worse in only 3 years, and after only 1200 miles.
Perhaps conti's have variable quality rubber?
Meanwhile, a couple of weeks ago riding home along country lanes with the smell of recent hedge-cutting in the air, and signs of hedge debris on the road, my rear wheel developed an audible tick - tick - tick - every one revolution of the rear wheel. I dozily thought it transmission related and decided to look into it when i get home at only a few miles away. The ticking turned out to be a small cut of bramble stem catching on the brake calliper, it had attached itself to the side of rear tyre by a huge thorn penetrating though the 'Bontrager R3' tyre wall. Unlucky to get it but lucky it plugged the hole for me to fix at home, so much easier than faffing about at the road side

Contis
were made in Germany. Now quite a lot of models are manufactured elsewhere. All the tyre companies have production facilities in the far east and most of them have had QA problems. The only big tyre brand that I have not seen manufacture rubbish at times is Michelin. But maybe someone knows different...?
cheers

The higher end Contis, including the GP4S, are advertised as being "handmade in Germany" on their website (
link) & in adverts.
Early deterioration could be a bad batch. It could also be something harmful encountered in storage (before or after purchase) or even out on the road. I've not noticed as being widely reported as a problem.
