The problem with road policing is that a significant minority of drivers want to be able to do as they like. When they vote, they vote against any taxation increases which could be used for enforcement, when they drive they ignore the law, and when they are on juries they let off drivers who drive as badly as they do however clear it is that they are guilty under the law. Some of them, as sub-group, actually hate and target cyclists, and or horse riders, and or other groups they don't like, and will say so openly- even celebs do this. They oppose speed cameras and any tax on their vehicles or fuel too.

And the irony of it is that the vast majority of this lawless, selfish minority of drivers flatter themselves that they are law abiding citizens - even as they speed, tailgate, overtake dangerously, etc.

Until that minority is marginalised and seen by everyone for what it is, rather than bolstered by the media, and shrinks to one so small it has no effect on legislation and enforcement, we're stuck with the mess we're in. I think if anything, that minority is getting bigger not smaller.

I'm inclined to agree and it's the lack of enforcement of the law that's causing it,so the less investment in the police the less enforcement the less enforcement....

I'm not sure that they are getting bigger. I think that they are just getting bolder. And some of those who some years ago wouldn't have said anything for fear of getting caught, now boast about it, or push the envelope that much more.

I agree they're getting bolder, but there appears to more bad driving than ever and more blatantly illegal/defective vehicles on the roads than eve.
IME the bad driving gets worse and more of it in the more congested areas.
