Garmin cadence sensor mounting

Hi all

Have a slight issue with my winter shoes and the Garmin crank mount cadence sensor. I’ve fixed the cleat on the shoe as much as I can to the insides so they’re at their furthest point from the crank arm, problem is the rubber band mount round the crank catches my shoes and rubs and squeaks.
Any alternative ideas on how I could mount them on the crank?

I used to have a Garmin speed/cadence sensor and I know what you mean.

The Garmin magnet is a chunky thing and mine used tie-wraps to the crank. It was ugly.

I bought some 12mm button magnets and used magnetism to "stick" a couple together stuck on the inner end of the pedal spindle. Much neater and simpler. I put the ugly Garmin magnet back in the box, and when I sold the system, the magnet went with it.

Are you talking about the newer magnetless sensor? If yes, you can put it as near to the bottom bracket end of the crank as it will go (mine is mounted with the furthest end of the sensor about 7cm from the axle centre), which will help if your cranks are the more modern flared ones.

If it is the magnet one, you are more limited.

I presume this is the sensor that doesn't use a magnet. Can you not just slide it up the crank away from the area of shoe rub.

Edit: RickH beat me to it.

Hi

Yes, sorry it’s the newer style one without a magnet. I hadn’t even thought about moving it up the crank! It won’t miss read or anything will it in terms of a single revolution? Not sure how they work you see.

I believe they just measure rpm using some sort of accelerometer.

I don't think the diameter of the circles they go round in matters much. I've not noticed any peculiarities with mine shoved right up the crank.

I did the rare earth magnet trick as mentioned by Mick F for the older GCS-10 sensor and the new type sensor is cable tied to the crank. I did look at ways of mounting it on the back of the crank but drew a blank.

Just an update really, I’ve put the sensor up the crank as close to the bottom bracket as I can and been out today. Been fine with no catching and seems to be reading fine......so yeah, job done.
