Nice one Axel! :D

Out cycling today, and I went past a DOUBLE BEND sign.
warning-sign-double-bend.jpg
It says in the HC, that the sign could be reversed.
Double bend first to left (symbol may be reversed)

I went past that sign, and it was the wrong way round!
Should I get a petition going about this, or maybe write a stern letter to Cornwall Council?

That's a case of using the wrong sign, and yes - you should tell the council, and they ought to correct it.

But that isn't what the petition is about. There is no intent to rip and replace existing signs, just to make future ones correct.

It's a schematic, not a picture.

It doesn't matter to most people at all.
It's recognisable as a football ............ that's all that's required.

I suppose if you're an avid football fan, it may matter to you if you're pedantic enough, but to the vast majority of folk, it doesn't matter at all.

It's a schematic - a representation.
Not a picture.

Is this not the equivalent of a prima Donna footballer rolling around in the floor, clutching his head whilst peeking through his fingers to see if the ref has picked up on his oh so obvious pain in the head caused by another petulant footballer kicking the ball nasty his lower legs?

What I mean is that this issue is only an issue to back few petty, football obsessives with an over inflated view of the importance of football in the grand scheme of things.?

To even give them any time in official circles is a waste of money. If it was up to me I would hunt all signatories of the petition, give them an asbo (or whatever they're called now) banning them from watching or listening to any football. Then force them to watch or play rugby until they like it and prefer it to football. Basically wean them off football with a long term goal of supplanting football as a "national obsession" into a minor sport thus reducing the amount of money sloshing around the sport ending....

Too far right?

Seriously though astonishing!? Move on! Get a life!

It's only a cycle lane, it doesn't matter to most people...

I'm not a soccer fan at all - I am opposed to the ridiculous dumbing down of everything as if idiocracy and 1984 are considered instruction manuals..

It's a schematic of a frisbee - and if it were an ultimate frisbee stadium then I'd have no issue with it, but it isn't - it's a soccer pitch - hexagons cannot make a closed shape.
Feel free not to sign it, it already has more than 10k signatures, and therefore HMG is required to respond to it.

Considering all brown signs are paid for by the visitor attraction they are advertising. Then this ia being directed at the wrong lot, it should be the FA.
Considering what they do for the people who pay to be entertained and care about them.

I do not that that they would do football association about it.

The brown signs might well be paid for by the attractions - but their format is defined by the government.

If it were a hockey stadium, what would the hockey stick look like?
Would the hockey enthusiasts complain if it wasn't spot on correct?

Golf courses have a flag .............. except it's not a flag. It's a straight vertical line and a triangle.

Also, what about an ungated level crossing?
We don't have locomotives like that any more.

But locomotives like that can and do exist.
A line and triangle is a sane projection of a typical (I believe, I don't do golf) golf target.
I have no idea if hockey sticks are of a fixed shape, but I think they'd object to the sign showing a la crosse stick.

A plain circle would be a sane projection of a ball, the current sign is not.

BTW 10k signatures only gets the standard missive that busy have received your petition. It does not get much more from what I've seen. It is totally irrelevant to HMG so you'll get nothing like what you think. No consideration other than acknowledge of receipt. To get anything else you're talking ten times as many replies I think.

Locomotives like a steam engine with - how many wheels? - do not exist, and certainly not on lines with ungated crossings that I've seen. Maybe I should start a petition?

A football like on the sign is a sane projection of a football IMHO.
It doesn't matter one way or another. The argument is pointlessly daft IMHO.
It looks like a football, so so what?

Hockey sticks?
What about the motorbike flying over a car?
Reindeer?
Speed cameras?
Road works?

They are representations, not TRUTH.
It doesn't matter, so long as people understand what the signs represent.

It's not a sane projection...

It's fundamentally wrong - a steam Loco is recognisable as a steam loco whether or not it has the same number of wheels as Thomas or Edward.

The whole point is that it *doesn't* look like a football that can exist in this universe.

It'd be like a steam loco picture with half the wheels on top, and the firebox under a carriage, not the boiler...

The picture of a man moving a pile of some material might be one of the regrets that the lady who designed most of them has, but it is still a picture of something in this universe.

The picture of two vehicles shows two types of prohibited vehicles.

The football stadium sign shows a frisbee

I owned a Frisbee before they were called Frisbees.
I had a Wham O! Pluto Platter.

They were Pluto Platters originally, and they looked nothing like a football.

Well if I was driving along in a strange city or town and whilst concentrating on other traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, road signs and getting to figure out which lane I need to be in to get where I want to and saw that sign my first, last and only thought about it would be football.

The only purpose of a road sign is to transfer the right meaning to the intended recipient. It has no need to be realistic only fulfill the intended purpose of instantaneously telling the viewer that the football stadium is that way.

The irrelevant idea of whether something can exist is pedantry. However to those pedants why not apply your pedantry to every other sign that's not 100% accurate.
