Thanks to a crossword I ended up reading the Wikipedia entry about the authors of Curious George kid's books, the Reys. In the article it says they "fled Paris in June 1940 on self-made bicycles". What would these self made bicycles be? Does anybody know anything about them? Were the Reys underground constructeurs ?

Hi
Maybe not what is referred to but a very good read about cycling during the German occupation.

I was interested to see that the German occupiers made cyclists carry numbers on their bikes - someone should tell our leaders next time that comes up :D

PBS (US public broadcasting) says the bicycles were built form spare parts http://www.pbs.org/parents/curiousgeorg ... /reys.html

And there is a book about the Reys' escape from Germany http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/13/books ... nazis.html
