Trouser clips

Post by PRL »

Now that trousers tend not to have turn-ups and seem to be getting slippier old-fashioned cycle clips (if you can find them) tend to slip down to let the hem get mangled in the chainwheel. ( the right hand led seems to be most prone to slipping on the butter-side-down principle).
There is always the "tuck into socks solution" if the socks are of appropriate length but I recently tried a pair of what are sold as conspicuity aids in Ohlson's rather like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bicycle-Reflec ... 56&sr=1-34
They seem to self-coil well enough to hold trouser legs out of danger and, being wider and lighter, have less tendency to slip down.
Is functional cycling so uncommon that Trouser Clips have gone the way of the dodo ?

I never did find traditional trouser clips that good - they were either too loose, too uncomfortable, not functional or they went rusty. I recall constantly trying to bend them into a more comfortable, snugger fit. I use the bands of the style in your link (I got mine from Decathlon) and I think they are brilliant - I wish that they were around in the 70s and 80s (except that I think they would have been a bit too ostentatious for 70s and 80s sensibilities),

Hi,
Hmmph.....I used to stuff elastic bands and Tesco plastic bags in my pockets of my cheap and nasty leakproof top, that was the seventies.
Elastic bands are still good for closing up drafty sleeves :)

There you go I am loosing my marbles :?
It was jeans and them stupid luminous acrylic sweaty socks that I used to fold and tuck trouser legs into, lack bands were for the wet weather.

I have been using slap bands for years. Usually for cycling, but occasionally walking in poor weather if I'm on the road.

I have bought them at retail outlets like halfords and from eBay at much lower costs, but you do seem to get what you pay for.

The cheap ones split and the metal band makes an escape!

Excellent job though. I leave mine coiled around the TT so they're always there. Never had any pinched yet[emoji848].

I have a collection of slap bands. Mostly removed from the hands of primary school kids when they were slapping their mates in the dinner queue or assembly.
Laccy bands are obtained where ever the posty parks his van. Outside my gate.

I have always used a Velcro Cinch strap.

Much more secure than a slap band and also keeps the trousers neat

.... and when not on the trike it doubles as a hand brake!!!!

we had to stop giving them out as they were slapping them around each other's necks, and then plastic was coming off to leave a metal edge. Pah, how do you expect the kids of today to learn about danger if you dont let them cut each other's throats now and then, eh?

Anyway, old style clips often not that comfortable, slap bands tend to come off easily for me, so i just rely on the big plastic disc on the large chain ring...does the job fine.

Problem with trouser clips is that they are easily lost/misplaced or not available when you need them, whereas socks are always available. I favour M&S which are a decent length for tucking in.

I've been using Respro ankle bands for many years. They are about 2 inches wide so give plenty of grippy surface and being neoprene have a little stretch adding to the non slip. http://respro.com/store/product/ankle-bands

Have you ever tried using a sock as a hand brake?

Just remember to pull them out when you go into shops
Not seen anyone do that for years an no longer wear long troosers :)

Clothes pegs. Or plunder the stationery cupboard and make off with the Bulldog clips.
