Record attempt scheduled
Re: Record attempt scheduled
You try catching a red squirrel in France - nippy, tricky, little blighters! There are alternatives - last summer I was chased along the road by a group of wild sanglien, and no-one wants to be caught by those - far too dangerous, I might have been eaten. We get wild deer in our garden, foxes galore, snakes, badgers, moles, and frogs, none of which I have any desire to stew up and taste. Do please keep the irony coming - and yes, I do have broad shoulders so it doesn't hurt.
Re: Record attempt scheduled
My friend, there are 50 pages of topics about untimed tours on the LEJOG route. If you want to avoid race talk, just read those instead of this one!Morzedec wrote: 25 Jun 2025, 9:27am I was just getting a bit fed up reading about all these 'records' that do not really quantify what is involved.
I don't MIND them, if that's what they want to do - but touring cycling it ain 't, which is what most of us are about - or ought to be on this site.
Re: Record attempt scheduled
Rather patronising, what? Miss my point if wish to continue to do so, but it's only polite to allow me an opinion
Even if it differs from yours - it's called open handedness.

Re: Record attempt scheduled
RTW differentiates between supported and unsupported I think, Lael Wilcox beat Jenny Graham's record last year but it looked like with rather more support?Morzedec wrote: 24 Jun 2025, 5:31pm Can anyone please advise the E to E 'record' when travelling alone, with no back up at all or assistance, carrying four panniers which contain all your clothes, food, a tent and sleeping bag, wild camping, plus a Trangia, and ridden on a Raleigh or something similar?
I don't think the supported records are any less impressive feats of mental and physical ability, but they definitely should be counted separately. IIRC the RRA only looks at overall speed though (and as that's their remit, that's also fair enough).
Re: Record attempt scheduled
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_th ... ing_record states that the Guinness World Record doesn't distinguish between supported and unsupported. However, quite a lot of people do, and both supported and unsupported attempts tend to stick to the same GWR rules.ratherbeintobago wrote: 26 Jun 2025, 11:19amRTW differentiates between supported and unsupported I think, Lael Wilcox beat Jenny Graham's record last year but it looked like with rather more support?Morzedec wrote: 24 Jun 2025, 5:31pm Can anyone please advise the E to E 'record' when travelling alone, with no back up at all or assistance, carrying four panniers which contain all your clothes, food, a tent and sleeping bag, wild camping, plus a Trangia, and ridden on a Raleigh or something similar?

Having just set the record for circumnavigating Ben Wyvis for married couples departing 20/6/25 starting and finishing from the Aultguish Inn, as verified by the race committee of my wife and myself, I'm not in the least interested in setting any recognised speed record but I'm interested in people that do, supportive of their efforts and often impressed by them.
A couple of related books, Jenny Graham's "Coffee first, then the world" is a good read, and so is her friend Lee Craigie's "Other ways of winning", which although the author is a champion mountain biker and noted adventure racer emphasises the fact that fastest, firstest etc. aren't the only important things. Both recommended.

Dash it, you should have told me; I've got a pile of sponsorship cash waiting for pretty much that exact expedition!pjclinch wrote: 26 Jun 2025, 3:33pm

We could have made your trip a lot faster and more comfortable, with regular positive media interaction en route. What a shame!

Finished but not without incident.mattsccm wrote: 15 Jun 2025, 6:59pm A clubmate, Brian Lewis is having a go at the age record . Either 86 or 87 so according the the GBoR that will get him the title. Might well do it. Was world champion in his age group last year in what ever they do at that age . A Grand Fondo type thing I think.

Not a LEJoG record, but would have taken both in and mighty impressive...
