Is it just a straight swap, take of the 8 cogs and slide on the 9, or are the hubs different? I know the indexing won't work with 8 speed shifters but i can switch to friction...
Its not as easy to get hold of 8 speed cassettes now is all...

You will need a new chain, as 9 speed chains are narrower - 9 sprockets in the same space as the 8. I think the Freehubs are the same.
There are plenty of 8 speed cassettes at Spa
When your LBS says something is getting obsolete, they just mean that they don't want to stock it anymore. With so many product changes, you can understand that, but specialist web based shops might well stock the part for years more. Simply because the UK market for an obscure part is far bigger than a single town's.

What is your equipment Canpgnolo or Shimano. How are we supposed to advise without that basic info ? they are differant .

re. 9 spd chain = 9 spd chainwheels
Maybe I have been lucky but I upped my Orange P7 from 7 to 9 speed when I bought new wheels. Obviously I had to buy a new chain, cassette and shifters plus a new rear Deore rear mech cos I saw one cheap but the original LX front chainset and rings plus front mech all work fine. All in I guess I spent about £ 85.00 plus the cost of the wheels (£100). I guess I could have had new rims and spokes on the old hubs but this has been the first big expense in 10 years of use. Everything works as it should and there were no special adjustments or fine tunes. I know it's the fact that the front rings are "worn in" that makes it work but I'll replace them as and when needed.
