Super-simple question:
Can you fit different trye widths to a given wheel rim? I've been shopping online for new wheels, but all they tell me is rim manufacture name, not the width of tyre they support!

If you go to the rim manufacturers website they have technical info for their ranges which will include the range of tyre widths for each model in the range and usually the maximum presure too. I don't know what rims you're looking at but for mavic it's
www.mavic.com.
The "open pro's" that i'm currently using are listed at 19-28mm which covers road tyres and this is true of most road rims but a hybrid for instance would probably want something a little wider.

The relationship between rim internal width and tyre section is anything from 1.5 to 2.2 times for road tyres, although something in the middle of that range (1.7 to 2.0) is best.
The bulk of online wheel sales in the 700C diameter are racing wheels, with rims all the same (approx 13mm) internal width, that'll accept all narrow racing-type tyres up to 28mm at a pinch. Since the goods are all functionally identical: there's no need for the vendors to speak of rim or tyre width.
If on the other hand you want some ready-made 700C wheels for a touring or hybrid bike, you DO need to ask the question.

Watch Out all tyres aren't made the same. I bought a pair of Michelin World Tour 700 by 32 and they were MUCh too big to fit my bike.
