Stronglight 99 chainset extractor thread

Post by hoogerbooger »

Anyone know if Stronglight 99's ever had 22mm threads ?

I acquired an old bike ( frame numbers suggests it's a 1983 frame) and components that look comtemporary, including a stronglight 99 chainset . At least I think it is a 99 based on looking at Velobase as it looks like this:
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx? ... 4&Enum=115

(cranks have 63 stamped on them...but they certainly don't look like the Stronglight 63 on velobase)

Velobase tells me the thread for the extractor is 23.35mm (not the current standard 22mm)

Elsewhere online I find a few statements from 1982 onwards that threads changed to 22mm....but can find no more clarity on whether that was just for Stronglight new chainset models after 1982.

I've just offered my 22mm extractor to it and it screws in without binding. and doesn't seem to be loose.

But I guess it might be 23.35 & the tool only be half covering the threads ...... in which case I may strip it if I try extracting.

hence my question this model defo 23.35mm whatever year it was produced ?

Timeline on the Classic lightweights site may help with identification but no mention of extractor size as far as I can see.

I have a Stronglight 99 chainset from the mid 1980s
Just measured the Sugino extractor I bought some years before for a Raleigh chainset and found it fitted my 99 perfectly.

21.7mm diameter.

AFAIK the statement about using 22mm threads after 1982 is correct. If you had the larger thread in the cranks, a 22mm extractor would wobble a lot and basically barely touch the sides.

Bingo. extracted.

Thanks guys

Could have just trusted my judgement, but it's a nice old chainset and I'd be annoyed if I damaged it

and no need to buy another extractor !

( oh yeah...with my right glasses on the cranks are stamped G3...not 63!)

Mine aren't.

How about K3 and J4?
Maybe they aren't a matched set?
The 99 chainset as a 52/36 double was bought in the mid 1980s from Colin Lewis Cycles. https://www.colin-lewis.co.uk
As you can see, the RH crank has caught on the front mech for a while.

This is the bike with the Stronglight 99 used in anger on my JOGLE in 1994.

Mick
I didn't find anything online as to what the stampings mean. However, just checked & I have G3 stamped on both cranks.

As mentioned I'm presuming mine is 1983 as the frame number starts 830 & the Wolber Gentleman super champion wheels, miche pedals, chainset and a few other parts look comtemporaneous, so presumed original to the frame.

( frame unfortunately rusty & bent. So currently no good for my missus. But just bought a 1978 straight (rusty) Bob Jackson mixte frame. Will have a go at 'cold setting, the Revell frame at some point when I've worked out how best to do -which is 531c )

just guessing, but could the marking be in a month + year format? If so, G3 could mean July 1983, for example.

cheers
