Do be aware that some 10 speed rear mechs can cause problems with some set ups and gear combinations because the wider 7 speed chain can rub on the jockey wheel side plates.

My choice would be a good used or new 9s XT RD. My objection to cheaper RDs is not that they don't work, it is that they are more easily damaged and they don't last so well.

Bear in mind that Shimano changed the "deraillieur ratio" of their rear mountain bike mechs when they went to 10 speed. 7,8 and 9 speed mechs all had the same ratio though (1.7) so you can use a 9 speed Shimano mech to replace your old Shimano M550 (LX) 7 speed mech. You can still buy 7 speed cassettes and chains of course. I have a similar issue and went for an Alivio 9 speed rear mech since that seemed to be the best quality 9 speed Shimano rear mech still available new?
