To be honest, I see and ride bikes that cost £100 and they look like bikes but they're just BSO's and within less than a year they need a service and parts that add up to at least half th price of the bike.
I work at a hire centre in the workshop and we log how many hires the bikes do.
I constantly have to change the whole chainset and BB on bike that don't even have 500 miles on them.
Things were built to last years ago.
I know that is A.S.B.O ( Art of Stating the Bleeding Obvious ) but when I look and ride this bike that was made over 80 years ago it's a little bit sad how we've let our standards drop so very far.
What is this bike worth ?

Build standards.... whilst I agree to some extent, I have to temper that with the quality/cost balance. That old bike may have cost 2 months wages when it was built, so if it's compared on that basis to a new one the quality of the new one is probably better (and a lighter bike, if value be placed on that)
