I don't think there is a shortage of marked police vehicles on the road but these are often dashing about responding to one incident after another because individual officers can be more 'productive' in that way. The time driving between incidents may give the appearance of some sort of patrolling but it isn't; apart from anything else, the crew is unlikely to stop to deal with any but the most serious of incidents because they are already committed.
In any case, most of those police vehicles are not specialist traffic patrols (whose crew will usually be identifiable by a white or flourescent cover on their caps) Traffic officers, trained to deal with the complexity of road traffic law enforcement, are nowadays a near-extinct breed.

It must vary across the different forces. The last few trips I've made in Devon (M5, north Devon link road, A38) I've seen police vehicles more than once, plus seen drivers pulled over on each trip. So police presence very much visible in Devon at least.
It must do and I personally blame the policy of limiting Police station opening hours. After a certain time the local stations shut and any Police have to be despatched from the force HQ.
That's quite a rant, reohn2. I'm not sure where you are 'seeing' all this stuff if you don't read newspapers. In any case we cannot have a debate based on your perceptions. Whether you see more or not, well founded statistics show that crime is down. In my view, this is likely because unemployment is down.

I'm known for the odd rant or two.

You'll know about lies, damned lies, and statistics then?I'm not sure where you are 'seeing' all this stuff if you don't read newspapers
If you were a salesman (I'm assuming your not ?) and you wanted to sell me a politrickal party, would you tell me the things it can't(or won't do)or the things it would like me to think its done.
I've told you I don't buy or read newspapers, there are other ways of obtaining news, there is also ones own experience of life.
You wouldn't be a fully payed up member of New Labour would you?
I was sorry to hear of the death of Gwyneth Dunwoody,a real politician/woman/socialist and will be sadly missed among a sea of salesmen believing their own rhetoric, wouldn't you say?

One of the nice things about this Forum is it doesn't get into Party Politics, so how about let's not.
I think it was a fair question as according to Yaxu New Labour don't seem to be able to do a thing wrong. And in any case Yaxu doesn't have to answer.
Though I will agree politricks is a filthy business.

There are sources of news and current affairs other than newspapers. There's the wireless and that new, clever invention of Mr Logie Baird called, I believe , the television.
You can't believe telly. For instance, the landings on the moon in'69 never happened. It was all done from a remote airfield in Arizona. I saw the film so that's how it must have happened!

a certain chief policeman went on the rant himself the other month saying that the real reason we are paying more tax for less cops on the street is because of the laws to protect human rights, diversity monitoring, statisitic monitoring and paper work. something like 14 forms have to filled out for each arrest or even a stop and search. so cops spend 2 hours on the paperwork for each offender. In fact the chief went as far to hint that the extra paperwork was down to preventing happening again the corruption in the police from the 70's and 80's. I'm not sure if he has gone on sick leave now. It's a problem that stems from the family. No matter what some people will claim, as you normally spend the most time with your family, at least in the first 10 years, the family has the most influence on a persons morals. So I say bring back 2 parent familys with input from grandparents who have already made the mistakes and should know better now. Then teachers and other people have a better chance of making a positive impact on children. More respect all round. But for the time being, build more prisons so we can house criminals in conditions that aren't gonna brutalise them and turn them into lifelong offenders. And zero tolerance law enforcement so people know what the boundarys are and know what the consequences are. No post code lottery on sentencing, if a justice system is to work then it must be fair for all. Lastly a better community spirit through more activities done locally, not all this lets go in the car 200 miles for a concert nonsense, but lets walk down the road to the local dance, book reading, jumble sale and autumn fair.

I for one can agree with that statement entirely.

You're right there Reohn. Can't think why such an intelligent man as John Maynard Keynes said "Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of motives, will somehow work for the benefit of all."
