Barbag overhangs edelux 2 Front light.
Barbag overhangs edelux 2 Front light.
I'm going on a tour in two weeks and I want to use a barbag.
Unfortunately I have my edelux light mounted on the centre front brakebolt. As the bag hangs in front of the light I need an alternative position for the light.
I have heard of these lights being mounted upside down.
has anyone dealt with this ? - I have a front rack but I don't want to mount it just for the light.

There was a thread about mounting upside-down recently, it is not advisable because of the shape of the beam but other brackets are available

Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

There is an upside down version of the Edelux (with the optics inverted) but you can’t just flip the normal one.
Some lights like the B&M IQX allow for Mounting either way as the mount is a ring that rotates around the light body but most STVZO dynamo lights cannot be easily inverted.
I’d suggest in your case either an alternate mounting location or some kind of adaptor to position the light further forward to clear the bag.

Overhangs by how much? There's several options for raising the bar bag slightly if that'd be enough. Alternatively, depending on the brakes and other fittings, you might be able to straighten the light bracket. Like this specific Brompton version, though you could probably modify your own.

I ride small frames with shortish head tubes and have suffered the same problem.
A less deep bar bag helps. I find this model of the Altura Arran works OK.

I've also used this Brompton front light bracket, which puts the edelux a little lower.

As per other posts, there are two versions of the Edelux and if you invert the right ways up one the beam pattern is wrong and may dazzle.
If you have the option of a front rack, you may also have a threaded rack mount on the RH (or LH if going to a place where they drive on other side) fork. I have used that to mount a light about 4 inches out from the fork using studding screwed into the mount, some tube that fits over it as a spacer, and bolts and washers. The position is a bit vulnerable, but its a tradeoff with a big shadow cast by front wheel. I used this with a Schmidt E6, which has the same mounting as the Edelux. Below is a picture of the studding on a front bracket, but it should show how this would work with a fork boss.
Not clear if you have a front caliper brake, or cantilevers or disks. The Schmidt bracket mounts the lamp quite high up over the brake from behind it. There are brackets that mount on the brake bolt, but pass under the calliper or cantilever straddle wire, and then mount the light in front of rather than above the brake, and lower down. B&M have the B&M472BAPB that works like this, but bike shops often have cheap pressed steel ones that can be adapted. Below shows this stye of bracket on a cantilever brake, and on a Brompton with callipers.
A less elegant option with a Rixen Kaul type bar bag mount is to simply tilt the bag up as far as you can bear. It doesn't look pretty but it can help.

Yes, not just the size of the bag, also where it sits on the fitting - for example the classic Carradice one sits higher than an ortlieb.
Re: Barbag overhangs edelux 2 Front light.
The best option, provided there's space between the mudguard and bar bag for the light at all, is the Brompton bracket.
A light on a low-rider boss works OK, but there's the wheel shadow, and the light is lower than ideal from a beam pattern point of view.
It's not as vulnerable as you might think - provided the light remains inside a line connecting the handlebar end and the bottom of the tyre, it won't touch the road so any knocks should be of the bike parking variety.
This spacer from SJSC may be easier than finding suitable lengths of studding and tube.
I used my Edelux for some years mounted in a similar fashion, on a boss part way between the low-rider boss and fork crown (similar to what you'd use for a mini-front rack like the Nitto M18) because the fork crown was recessed too much below the headset, and an extended brake allen bolt wasn't usable.

Another option if you’re open to relocation is mounting on the front mudguard. I have mine mounted there (with another stay for stabilisation on one bike, rack on the other) and it’s a great position, good height and no wheel shadows.
Re: Barbag overhangs edelux 2 Front light.
Thanks to all for the suggestions. I think the Brompton bracket is the answer plus moving a 10 cm spacer so I can raise the bars by that amount.
