Mosquitos in Sweden - net needed or not?

Post by foxyrider »

I'm off to Sweden in the summer and at least part of the time i'll be camping using my Vaude PowerLizard.

There are two questions here really, 1) do I need to be concerned about mossies along the south east coast and islands and 2) do I need a separate mossie net.

The second part is a bit confusing, Vaude suggest that the inner tent is sufficient as is, not requiring a supplementary net. Is this right?
Convention? what's that then?

We went on a summer woodland walk near the coast about 60km south of Stockholm.

The mossies weren't numerous but were large, fast, cunning and painful (think flu jab as the proboscis goes in) - beware :!:

The mosquitoes up there are not malaria carrying, they still bite, but it won’t kill you.

Mossies are just big midges :)

The tent inner will keep out mossies just fine, provided it's zipped up.
What is a problem is them getting in through the open door with you. General advice is to avoid leaving the inner unzipped, and to devote a some time to killing any that did get in with you before going to sleep.

What might be useful is to treat the top inside of the inner with permethrin spray (mostly used for mossie nets). Insects that do get in often like to settle in the roof, and this may kill any you miss before they bite.

A net may be useful if you sleep in the huts that some sites have.

Wasn't worried about disease but I can be a bite magnet!

I haven't found them to be too bad in coastal areas. In forest and fields, however, they can be fairly thick.

Not much experience of mozzies, but with midges my tent is completely proof against them but I always take a net (sewn in to a hat) in summer. Why? Because I don't want to be trapped inside the tent the whole time! (and that's got a lot more space than a Power Lizard)

I was contemplating a head net - which do you use?

Mine's a Robert Saunders one, so long since unavailable, but there's plenty out there. Some will go over a (wide brim) hat, some are closer fitting. Mozzies might be better kept at bay by a bigger one as I imagine their longer proboscis might be able to reach through a net touching the skin. On that front I'd take advice from people who encounter them: I'm only dealing with midges.

Pete.

Just as an update, decided to get a head net, a Trespass example that weighs 20g and is supposed to be mossie and midge proof. Will fit over my bush hat that'll be going anyway.

Thanks for all the input
