I seem to remember it can be done. Anyone know how?

Newer ones with a 2mm bolt under the hood rubber, older ones
(5700)with spacers.

My 5703 ones came with the spacers in the same bag as the BB cable guide, if that helps you check your parts bin...

Most bike shops have piles of these things. They come with the bikes and are put aside if not needed. Worth having a chat with LBS.

If you can't get hold of some left over in a bike shop aftermarket ones can be bought. I got some specialized branded ones (I think) for my 105 9sp stis.
