It might be possible rebuilding wheel without interlacing the spokes might reduce the bends at the nipple. I have had this issue before and this was a solution.

Yes, I see no reason for crossing them under and over on a 2x small wheel.
I'll study that, but I'm not going to undo the present wheel to do it. I should be able to envisage it.

When I build up the new ones, I'll see if it works.
