How to fix issues with Garmin Edge Explore 1000 and time & distance to go to point?

Hi All,

Firstly please accept my sincere apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere in another thread! I did do a search and I didn't spot my exact issue, amongst the many issues experienced by people, but if I missed an answer in another thread I'm sorry.

My question is about the feature/option on the Garmin Edge Explore 1000 to show both the distance and time to a point when you are riding a course route on the Garmin unit.

The last couple of rides that I had done when riding a course which has been uploaded to the unit have been fine for roughly the first half of the ride whereby it counts down the miles to go until you reach your destination and it also gives you an estimated time of arrival. I find this feature helpful because it's handy to be able to send a message to my family with an estimate of the time that I will be home just so as they know for peace of mind and also it might raise their attention if I don't appear any time close to the estimated arrival time.

Anyway on my last couple of rides when I've ridden a course all goes well until about halfway though my ride when two things happen.

Firstly the distance to destination stops counting down and in fact resets to the figure shown at the beginning of the ride and it shows the total ride distance as if you've not yet ridden any distance at all.

Secondly the estimated time of arrival suddenly increases by hours because it must base this on the fact that it thinks that you have the entire course distance still to ride.

Whilst this is going on the other metrics seem to be okay so the distance ridden keeps going up and the elapsed time of the ride continues.

I just wonder if anyone else has had these issues and if there is a way to save them.

My Garmin Edge is on software version 9.20

Thanks if anybody has any thought, tips or ideas to try!

John

Could it be that it thinks it’s lost the course?

Do a factory reset then sync for the latest update.

Fixing issues with Garmin is a full time hobby!! I cant answer your specific query but I'm wondering why you're not using 'livetrack' to let family know exactly where you are?

I've not used (not even noticed) that feature but the only (very few) times I've had problems (with an old Edge 605 & once with an Edge 1000) have been when I've accidentally added a "hard" waypoint that isn't actually quite on my real route. (Plotted route down a sidestreet or just past a junction are probably the easiest to accidentally get, especially if you aren't zoomed in enough in whatever you are plotting the route on.)

Once I've passed that the course metrics go haywire & turn-by-turn navigation stops (there is still the line on the map to follow so all is not lost navigation-wise), but the stuff currently being recorded carries on as normal. With the 1000, I think, if you pass another hard point then it seems to resume everything. But that has only happened once with the 1000 so I can't be completely sure.

Hi All and thanks for the advice,

Hi Paulatic, maybe that's an answer but it's when I'm on the course that it has issues and not when it's displaying an off course message alert.

Hi foxyrider, that's not a bad idea to try that.

Hi jessand, further to your message don't get me started on this point because that is a separate issue which is really annoying me as well right now! The Livetrack function and the crash alert is the very reason that I bought this Garmin in the first place. This followed a crash that I had when I was knocked off my bike by a car and my loved ones didn't know where I was or what had happened to me when I didn't arrive at my workplace at the right time. Livetrack has worked fine for the two years or so that I've had this Garmin. Then within the last couple of weeks Garim have done some updates and things related to personal data etc. and hey presto the last time I used the Garmin I get a message to say that the incident detection feature has been disabled and when I started to ride the Livetrack feature failed. Therefore I have a total of three Garmin issues to try and resolve right now which is frustrating!

Hi RickH, thanks for that advice and I'll pay close attention to what I'm doing when designing a course and try to avoid accidentally adding any hard waypoints.

Thanks, John

Hi John

When the update was done you had a message asking if you give permission for Garmin to access your contacts. Unless you gave permission your live track and incident detection would not be available to your family because they are contacts. I had the same problem and when I went in and changed the settings to give access, everything works again.

Hi jessand,

Thanks for your message and when the update was done I remember the message saying that if you don't allow Garmin to access your contacts the Livetrack and Incident Detection features would be disabled and so I'm sure that I clicked to allow access to my contacts. However since that point those features haven't worked.

Therefore maybe I had a case of my finger pressing the wrong option on the screen. However I can't find anywhere in the settings which for example say "Allow access to Contacts" yes or no so that I can check that I have the correct option selected.

You say that you went into the settings and changed this and I'm sorry to have to ask but do you remember where you went in the settings and was it via the Garmin Connect App on your phone?

Thanks again!

John

John,

From connect app:
Three bars at top of screen
Settings
App permissions
Contacts - need to be on
Location - needs to be on

Hope this helps.

Hi Jessand,

Many thanks for your help & advice which is much appreciated and this has helped because I've now received a message on saying that Livetrack is activated again which is a relief.

The way to get through the menus was slightly different on my phone and I wondered if this could potentially be a difference with a Windows Android phone versus and Apple iPhone running iOS? I've got an iPhone so I just thought I'd write down below the way I got to these menus just in case anyone else with the same problem reads this:-

In the Connect App at the bottom right hand of the screen there is a button called "more" > Settings > App Permissions

Then it's the same as the message from Jessand below.

Thanks,

John
