Sunree Head Leds.

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

Hi,
I need a clamed waterproof head led for camping and as a reliable failsafe for repairs etc even a bike light at least.
Finally plumed for a sunree -
SUNREE.jpg

Mainly for the IPX7 and the silly runtime on low spot 135hrs? And 3 X AAA batts.
Anyway I am testing at the moment for runtime.
After getting It noticed there is no hermetic seal to battery compartment?
I see what they have done - gubbins is sealed (claimed) and batt contacts are ST STL........ :?:
Flood is COB Flood pretty good, some 17 hrs, not that you need it for that type of work?
Spot High is easily bright enough to see some 20 - 30 yards, low spot is good for inside tent.
Red (not sure of its use?) lasts for ever.
Click stop for tilt is lightbut feels ok.

P.S.- As you know rechargeables are a tad long for most of this stuff, but I did get some to fit, though I am intending to use non-rechargeables for a slightly longer run life, I would imagine their claimed run times are with non rechargeables.

Cold weather kills led head torches. I have had a few attached to my cycle helmet, sub zero cycling temp kills them.

Red (not sure of its use?)

You can use the red light to preserve night vision when hiking at night, if you do that sort of thing. Or you could turn it round and use it as a rear light if all else fails while cycling may be?

Good point!

P.S. I will do some tests, what part of a led light is affected by cold weather?
What batteries type give poor cold weather performance?

Hi,
Well I put three ni mh aaa batts in the freezer for an hour and the voltage dropped from 1.37 to 1.35.
The Sunree led lasted 70 hrs on low spot, two bats dropped to 1.12v and one less than 1.0v, 1.2 is the typical nom voltage for this type of batt I believe?
At that point the other led functions are all dim or non selectable.
I expect to last longer on standard no rechargeables.

That would be long enough for my purpose.
Be interesting to do some proper field tests, and how water will affect the exposed, well non sealed battery case?

Also good in shelters or dormitories etc if you want to get up when it's dark as it stands far less chance of disturbing other sleepers.

Last year I bought a Fenix HL32 because of it's 2000mAh battery, bigger than most of the rechargeable lights out there.
The official burn times are always to be taken with a pinch of salt, but I was pleased to see that in high mode (300lmn, very bright) would do over 4hrs as stated, and the low mode (70lm, enough for reading) went over the 24hrs the manufacturer spec.

Hi,
Fenix looks good and ticks all the boxes for sure.
I originally wanted a head led for camping / repairs at night, and today I need a light which I can rely on to work in the damp and have a long run time at reading light level.
Also I thought that replaceable batts means I can always buy a power source, If I run down via on route on tour.
I was being economical as I struggle to warrant the high cost on the times I need a light away from home over night etc.
I have time yet to look at other lights, I already have some rather cheap li-po I use at home for repairs and looking under the stairs etc :)
Non replacement Rechargeable do have their faults but normally more an inconvenience.
I commonly have used replaceable rechargeable batt led head lights, my modern rechargeable built in ones are a little more convenient and longer lasting than daily replacing batts, Any afternoon work outside normally sees me working into the dark evenings so I always don my light before going out, also a good place to keep my glasses :)
Thanks for the heads up, will study a little further.

Well, I'm one of those that never finds an open off-licence to buy AAA batteries at 10pm sunday in the middle of nowhere... :(
