Wild camping in the Yorkshire Dales / Lake District?
Wild camping in the Yorkshire Dales / Lake District?
I'm seriously interested if anyone's ever managed to wild camp in the Yorkshire Dales / Lake District (NB. While I'm ok with the rest of the UK, I've always assumed population densities, lack of cover et al, make it a impossible).
While I'd like to have a few long weekends through the Dales/Lakes this spring, the campsite fee's are extortionate (£12-20 a night), each night exceeding the cost of a train ticket and food! (NB. Managed to get a couple of decent deals this weekend, both campsites agreeing to £10.00 max (NB. To the one who insisted on £20.00, I stated I'd sleep on their verge outside)

My off site camping isn't usually very wild... other than that I've never had more of an issue there than anywhere else, though I tend to arrive late and leave early, there's a couple of picnic areas in the Lakes that I've used several times.

Have to admit I once camped at Bolton Abbey about ten yards from a big 'No Camping' sign. Tent up at sunset, away at seven in the morning, no-one any the wiser.

Two places I know of
Up past hubberholme in dentdale
And in barbon dale on the road over to dent.
In fact they are caught in the act on Google maps at the sharp bend in the road!
Both quite remote roads.
Cheers James

I have never had a problem finding an overnight camp in the lakes or the dales and north yorks moors. Try find a site not visible from the road or a dwelling. I usually find a spot within an hour. Not often a flat grassy area and sometimes bracken needs to be cleared or In a hollow behind a mound. Woods are good if not fenced off. If it says no camping i dont camp there. I tend not to use fields either. Once your eye is in you will see places everywhere. Usually 10 minutes down the road from lastnights spot.

Thanks to all, but if even picnic areas have been used, it must be possible
While I've never had issues crashing out in various parts of the UK, the population densities (Permanent & transient) in the Dales & Lakes have always put me off. But given the cost of the train and food for a long weekend is less than a single night on a campsite, I'll try being wild!

Have you ever been disturbed at night? Suppose that's the most significant issue putting me off wild camping in the Dales/Lakes

One night in the woods at windermere there was 2 red deer rutting which made me wonder if i was going to get trampled on . Only once have I been discovered. On hard knott pass above the layby over a ridge is a flattish patch a young couple were surprised to see me there i think i spoiled their plans
I try to be discrete and off the paths.

I've slept out in the lakes loads of times but not while cycling. Walking only. If that's your thing I can suggest loads by pm. If you pm me with ideas of where you'll be going if you're backpacking I'll give you some options if I can.
As for cycling I'm less certain. If going over Dunmail Raise between Aside and Keswick plus you're happy leaving the bike alone while walking a bit I have somewhere. There's a few places around an hour walking from a road. Some even closer.
The river spot on the road between Barbon and Dent is well known as a wild camping spot. Can be full of people sitting round a fire and drinking in summer if you're unlucky.

We got attacked by a stoat in a campsite in the UK. It chewed it's way in to get food. I think that's possibly the closest the UK can get to a Bengal tiger.
Keep safe out there people!

I've regularly wild camped in the Lakes but not with a bike so high up on or near to the tops.

Tell me about it..!! Never a dull moment for the codhead on tour.
I have just read that a rubber plantation worker was taken out by what the authorities suspect was a Sumatran Tiger. His family went looking for him and found his head before locating the rest of his body. Just as well I wasn't wild camping in Sumatra as it was far too hot.
