Does anyone know if I can use a 386EVO crank and thus BB in a normal BSA threaded frame? 30mm axle but it looks as if the bearings are external so it should work and various reviews don't suggest that it won't work.
Why? I have a nice 386 crank set but it no longer serves its purpose in the frame it is in but would work well else where. Reluctant to buy a new tool to yank it out in case it doesn't fit and it is easier to ask the experts.
BB/crank standards
Re: BB/crank standards
for a 30mm spindle to fit in a BSC threaded frame the cups plus running clearance can only be ~2mm wall thickness. I wouldn't claim I've seen everything but this does seem marginal to me...?

Re: BB/crank standards
Of course. FSA's BB386 is pretty universal fitting most BB shells.
You need to buy the right bottom bracket to allow it to work in a 68mm BSA threaded bottom bracket shell. And I THINK you might need a pair of adapters.
Brucey - with the correct BB it works in the fashion of an external bottom bracket. BB386 has an extra long (30mm) axle.

I should coco.
Re: BB/crank standards
Had another look. The bearings are most definitely out board so are not affected by the BB shell. They are also, at least on my bike, oversize compared to something like a Shimano external BB. Just trying to avoid buying a tool (yes I'll need it later) and having a fight with a BB that I reckon is rather stuck, only to find its no good.
I know I can use an adaptor to fit a more normal crank such as Shimano in this BB but want to move the lot to another bike.

Re: BB/crank standards
FSA definitely make a BB for using a 386EVO crank in a BSA threaded frame: https://shop.fullspeedahead.com/en/bb386-crank-to-bsa-frame-thread-steel-bearings.

The 386 is essentially a BB30 with a longer axle, so you can use external cups (of which most will use nothing less than the ubiquitous BB30 bearings, type 6806) on a traditional threaded frame.
The downside of this is that the cups are usually more expensive, although the bearings can often be replaced for cheap, and you will have very little room left inside so it's a no-go if you're using electronic gears and/or hydraulic hose running inside the BB shell.
