Generally the average touring person in France will take a total weight of about 3500 kg divided between two persons in a motor home. This compares to about 75 kg total weight of vehicles and luggage for two persons using bicycles. It is the cyclists (the latter group) who suggest reducing this and taking less stuff. It is obviously therefore possible to live on two planets at once and I'm going to claim a Nobel prize.

Hi,
That's a tough one, whether to cut down on weight at the expense of comfort?
When I was younger I took everything but the kitchen sink, I was fit enough it did not really matter to me, (I am specifically talking about Back packing and walking not cycling) we have better equipment today and is somewhat lighter to, certainly more choice and much much cheaper too.
On my last tour end July Devon and Cornwall I've just took the basics, no tent 5 mm thick foam mat cheap 600 g Sleeping bag and a cheap bivvy bag.
In six days I was chilly one morning, the other days I was comfortable, I had to use the bivvy bag to only on one night after getting wet and cold.
slept in three sided or less bus stop shelters, four nights on a concrete floor two nights on wooden bench. I am 61
I have learnt a lot over nearly 50 years of camping.
Overnight Comfort is very important like food and weather protection.
My basic experience is that I would rather carry an extra 10 Ibs on my back than suffer cold and hunger.
Certainly makes you feel better with a reserve rather than knowing that you might have to suffer, it would play on your mind all day.

so we get older and need our comfort more, but we have more experience to tune our kit.
That doesn't really answer the question does it?

(lb This is apparently correct usage for pounds weight, https://english.stackexchange.com/quest ... -of-weight)

Edited - On the correct spelling of the abbreviation of pounds weight, always wondered why the L small case looks Like a capital I?
In the draft the small L looks correct but after posting it looks like a capital I, no wonder I am confused.
