Implementing the Hubbub mod

Post by Russell »

I've been running 10sp Veloce shifters on a Shimano 8sp back end for a while now and recently changed to a 9sp cassette for an extra lower gear.

I've run the cable as per the Hubbub mod and i'm now having problems getting the chain to drop on to the 9th smallest cog. The indexing on all the other gears seems spot on, they select reliably (on the workstand at least). The chain drops nicely from 1 down to 8 then the last click does not have an effect on chain postition. In effect the derailleur does not move enough.

The only way is to have the spare click at the bottom end and use two clicks to select 9th - which works reliably. Therefore the end stops are set correctly.

Anyone any thoughts?

yep!
the answer is that the 8 speed mech won't "throw" far enough, ie. doesn't move wide enough for 9 cogs. I had the same problem and bought a 10 speed ultegra mech and it then worked ok.

Pigman, I don't disagree with what you say as you have been there done that and that solution worked for you, but if the existing mech will select 9th using the double click surely the mech is moving enough.

I don't understand.

Further info, I have a new chain, new cassette, new inner cable and new final section of outer.

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking along the same lines, gaz. I gave the innards of the mech a good squirt of aerosol chain lube jic.

Either reply/solution requires a new mech so I think I will live with the double click for a while. It's not as if I use the 11 tooth very often.

It may be sticky cables allied to a worn mech. Try greasing the inners and running oil down the outer casings. The mod DOES work perfectly - we have 4 bikes set up that way and I've just ridden one home from work.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!

It's a way to alter the travel of the rear mech (per click) so it will work with Campag shifters.

Essentially you turn the cable clamp through 90 degrees anticlockwise and clamp the cable in the new place.

Works a treat...Try www.hubbub.com
