Freewheel removal tool

Post by 20130814 »

Hi. I have an old wheel with a freewheel on it which I would like to remove.

Image

It is one inch across as in the hole in the middle is one inch across and each of the four raised sections is a quarter of an inch across.

I wondered if anyone knows which tool I might need to remove the freewheel please?

Thanks

It isn't a winner pro freewheel (it is an 'alpha?) but ideally you need a sun tour winner pro freewheel remover (with four drive points). An older Sun Tour two-peg remover may also work, but there are slight differences in the fit, plus if the freewheel is super-tight, there is an increased chance of damage because there are only two pegs.

If you just want to take the freewheel off to throw it away, there are destructive means of doing this.
If you just want to take it off to service the hub bearings, don't bother; you can do almost everything you need to with the freewheel on.
If you want to change a spoke on a Small Flange hub you need to remove the freewheel.
If you want to change a spoke on a large flange hub you can remove the sprockets from the freewheel body instead of removing the entire freewheel if you like.

AFAICT Park Tool FR3C is a reasonable facsimile of the sun tour tool. Several other tool manufacturers also make something that is suitable.

This photo shows some tools including the correct SunTour one

It's a four-dog tool you need.
Can I read Suntour on the lockring? It seems Brucey has identified it.

I had one some years ago.
SJS Cycles sell the Park Tool version for Suntour but the dogs look too wide I think.

Probably sat in my toolbox for the last quarter of a century or more unused. If you're not in a rush drop me a PM and I'll send it on to you.

Edit: On its way.

To remove it without the tool (if you're not going to use it again):

1. Remove the freewheel adjustable bearing cone using a pin spanner or a hammer and punch. It unscrews clockwise. To get to the cone, you *may* need to remove the top sprocket or two. The top sprocket is normally screwed on (unscrews anticlockwise) and you'd need two chainwhips for this bit. Remaining sprockets are usually splined and just pull off. You may not have all the tools needed to do this stuff.

2. Pull everything off: sprockets, drive head, shims etc. Loose ball bearings will go everywhere.

3. If they haven't fallen out, remove the pawls. There are now two flats on the freewheel body which can be used for a big spanner (this worked for me) or clamped in a vice while you turn the wheel. Don't overtighten the vice, as you could crush the freewheel body onto the hub threads and ruin the hub.

a cyclo remover? FWIW if you can't find one which is stated to be correct it may be possible to modify one to fit, simply by grinding a little off the two prongs as necessary.
