More CTC spam, this time unsolicited junk mail on healthcare

Post by jerryw »

Has anyone else found a "Why pay more for your health insurance?" form letter on their doormat today, courtesy of the CTC?

Why is our subscription money being used to set us up for marketing campaigns for CS Heathcare? At what point did we all opt in to being sent this junk?

Living in the center of Guildford, I have to dispose of three or four unwanted circulars a day from local businesses. I could really do without subbing the CTC to go the same way as that other purveyor of crap offers, the Camping and Caravaning Club.

If you feel the same way, perhaps you could join me in pointing out to Mr Jackson at HQ the idiocy of using the trusted relationship the club has with its members for marketing purposes?

Regards,

Jerry

Mine arrived this morning and I thought that they are doing this to raise some extra income for the CTC. However I do not think that the club should be doing this in order to raise funds.
It links in to the questions about the club having an environmental policy.

So it is a choice between a moral rejection of environmental harm and intrusion on the members or a tiny increase in subscriptions.

A possible solution is to have a motion at the next AGM to forbid the circulation of non-cycle specific advertising to the members using the club address list. I am too lazy to do this (like Mick F I have a real fire :) )
I am perfectly happy to second the motion if anyone else proposes it.

Thanks Meic!

I'll propose this as a motion for the next AGM then.

Agree on the benefit of using this kind of thing to light the kindling but it's summer now, the chimney has been swept, and the coal scuttle is already overflowing with stuff that needs to be burnt rather than recycled because it could be used for identity theft...

When I first joined the CTC I received a mail shot for the CTC credit card, which I applied for at the time and got turned down. I was skint at the time - and perhaps poor people don't matter to the CTC. Cycling is a white male middle class game - but the kind of offers that members can get turned down on could be a big turn off.

there's a parallel discussion on ACF which has dwelt on the employment of UKMail to deliver the envelope. The argument is that competition from UKMail is undermining rural post offices, and that cyclists often have reason to be grateful for the presence of rural post offices. I'm not sure that this holds as an argument, but, as one who shuns private health 'insurance' when it is offered as a part of what has come to be called a 'package', I was taken aback by the contents rather than the envelope.

I suppose that it is very, very easy to annoy people, however inadvertantly.

Some time ago the National Council took the decision to offload shares that offended. The offloading was done by Peter Jackson, who reported to the Council, making us aware of the consequences of our decision. I'm not aware of any similar decision in respect of commercial relationships, but I will enquire. In the mean time I should point out that it is not Mr. Jackson that people should be cross with, rather it is the National Councillors, myself included, who should take the heat.

So, I apologise. I'll first establish the position, by asking the Director whether any decisions have been made by the National Council on commercial relationships - there have been none that I recall in my relatively short tenure. And, when I have the answer to the question, the next thing will be to seek to agree guidelines with my fellow councillors, if at all possible. Having said that the AGM is the final court on policy, and there's nothing to stop a motion being proposed for the next one.
