Well, lifejackets...
Anyone ever notice how canal tow-paths have become popular cycle routes?
Now, if you get it Wrong while cycling along one and land in the canal, which will do you more good, a crash helmet or a life jacket?
You can tell where this is going, I suspect, but I'd suggest you'll get by with neither...
Pete.

Ofcourse there is the "single pannier" problem - two panniers will offer more flotation than a single pannier - so should be compulsory on canal paths.

I normally wear a helmet, however I came out without it today and couldn't be bothered going back to get it.
I noticed a couple of things.
1. Cycling without it was much more enjoyable.
2. Far from feeling less safe, I found I didn't have a constant reminder of my mortality perched on my head.
I'll probably still continue to wear one, they're still handy for moving low hanging foliage out of the way with.

Basically, because I have the ability to Edit people's posts, I can see what you did.
"Hel(open italics)(close italics)met" confuses our hacker.
I have emailed Admin.

Wot?? A hacker for real?? I thought it was an admin playing silly beggers.
And here I thought we were sad for all this talk about helmets, there really is someone sadder who spends his/her time turning helmets into polystyrene hats

:)

According to the DTI (apparently) there are 500,000 head injuries to children each year. We are expecting the 2,800 which are cycling related to benefit from wearing helmets........ why shouldn't the other 99.4% of head injuries benefit from the same protection. If you would expect your child to wear a helmet on a bike, why not expect them to wear one on a climbing frame?

Because there has been at least on case of a child choking on the straps of a helmet after it got caught on playground equipment.
No proof that helmets have saved a life on playground equipment, but proof that that they have killed one child.

I shocked some parents at a park when I told my daughter to take her helmet off because otherwise she could strangle herself!

I did point this incident out on page 1!
There is evidence of helmets inducing injury on bicycle as well...

This morning, on the radio (XFM), I heard an ad full of random safety messages, such as don't cross at pedestrian crossings until the green man appears (not the pagan one! the one on the signal).
One of them was don't ride a bicycle without a helmet. No more information or justification, just that message. Sorry for no more details but I had just woken up! But then I listened more intently to see who the message was from, but nothing was said. Just a twenty second stream of random safety messages. LOL.
To me it just smacked of brain-washing the population. I've only just recently started cycling, and at first I didn't wear a helmet. I had one all the time, I just didn't wear it. Purchased it because I just assumed you wore one when on a bike. Then I read some articles on possible reasons for not using a helmet. But after around five weeks I've chosen, rightly or wrongly, that I want to wear it. But that's the thing, I've CHOSEN.
So I'm against compulsion and random and unaccountable media telling us to wear helmets.
