Indeed!
My recent return to proper employment after three years of post redundancy minimal income prompted investigations into a holiday for the first time since 2004.
The increase in things like cross channel ferry fares over the past 4 years appears to be quite substantial, so much so that even our once regular jaunt across to Britanny/Normandy has now become prohibitively expensive - with kids at school we are forced to go in the peak times. So it's another holiday free year for us. And for the foreseeable future, I guess.
Nay Nigel, nay. You can buy family tents from the camping chains for (a lot) less than a hundred pounds and there are still reasonably priced sites in this country. Cooking some pasta or a nice bit of fish bought from an angler on the quay in the fresh air, a few spices, a bottle of plonk du supermarket and the world's your lobster.
Watch the sun go down and the stars come up, owls hunting, bats doing aerobatics, foxes calling. Priceless.
if you want a cheap but fun holiday, try camping. OH, my friend and I are off to the New Forest for three days. Campsite has cost £70 ( and we are going to a Camping & Caravanning Club site as friend hasn't camped for 20 years so we wanted a good site) and we have food for all but 2 lunches for £40 - and we're feeding well.
We're taking the bikes (of course) and also planning a day's walk.
We have 2 tents - think we paid about £160 for the bigger tent
You can camp for a lot less if you are prepared to compromise on the site and you don't need fancy meals.
But back to camping holidays, have spent several years with no money and have had some very basic holidays, cycle camping/wild camping in Scotland with an indoors choice as a back-up on a bad day.
Depends on your kids whether this is acceptable or not.
Also some of the independant hostels in Scotland are quite cheap.

Apart from the "charge as much as people will pay" theory, can anybody tell me why camping in the UK costs so much? We camped in a very well equiped municipal camp site in central France last year, 10 nights for €62. Also last year 2 nights camping near Bath £52. Why?

Because Campsite owners are greedy its as simple as that,we tried to book a caravan pitch in North Devon (Bay View caravan site Croyde)short notice and they wanted something over £450(can't quite remember the amount) for a week!!!!
I agree that European sites are often cheaper, but where are you guys staying? I object to paying more than a fiver per person per night, and have never stayed anywhere for more than £10. £52 for 2 nights?! How many of you were there?!
Get ready for high prices next year for bikes. Whatever you buy now will seem like a bargain. Taiwan prices have shot up and it's not going to take long till those prices hit the shops.
