Oh, I don't know. Might be great if Her Maj were to see the light and join in! I can just picture her having to be gently prised off after glueing herself to the street in Whitehall, or wherever. Would Phil the Greek join in?

Phil the Greek is more likely to just mow them all down in his range rover. Two reasons, bleeding anarchists and they're in the way the peasants!

So what would the assemblies really add? Would the assemblies not just review the same evidence? What if they came up with the same or very similar answer? Do you really think ER would stick to the outcome if it didn't give the result they wanted or expected?

Sorry but it's a gimmick to give cover for unreconstructed green activists who won't be happy unless the whole economic model is torn apart. I'm more than sceptical about it all. I'd like to be proven wrong though because at the end of the day climate change exists and the sooner it's managed the better. I just don't see how their approach will achieve anything significant.

But our Government is not taking the sort and scale of action which is necessary.
Their backbone needs stiffening by demonstrations which reveal the desire of large numbers of citizens, and their passionate belief that much more needs to be done.
The demonstrators are nor "crusties" but people of all ages and walks of life.
Democracy cannot be limited to making a pick from a limited number of choices every few years.
I think that a very sizable proportion of the people believe that the situation is a crisis. The Government needs a strong push.

I fear you may be right, there. But didn't he hand in his driving licence, recently? Not that I suppose that'd stop him....

I doubt it. This is what a typical Scottish grouse moor will probably look like, once Climate Change really sets in....

I think XR would be more than happy if your approach works. Have at it!

Btw the climate change committee is the body you're thinking of and it was 2050 not 2025 ( it may have shifted to 2040). The issue isn't that people aren't taking about this, the issue is that there isn't any action; the govt simultaneously commits to very difficult targets, fracking and building runways. These things are just not compatible with their supposedly "legally binding" targets.

I am sure you are right, the whole lot are insincere hypocrites.
Actually, I see attacking those who try to make a change as the last stage of climate crisis denial.

You misread my post. See highlighted part. ER want it by 2025 but climate change committee gave the realistic date and iirc a path to achieve it. ER give a 2025 date and no way to realistically get it. 2025 is a little over 5 years right? You really think that is remotely possible without shutting down a lot of UK and it's economy/ industry? Pie in the sky dreams, reality is needed.

Things are happening. What you mean is they're not happening in the way and pace you want. Even what is happening is nothing to do with ER. ER are basically stamping their feet but actually doing nothing constructive. The assemblies idea might work out but it would be good if ER put ideas how to achieve targets by 2025.

I want that target met by 2022 it ain't going to happen. Anyone else want to join me and shut down cities around the UK to achieve it without any idea how to actually do it. I suggest we randomly pick members of the general public to be led by professional facilitators to enable them to understand the evidence that's available only to realise there's no way to achieve it? Does that not sound like a good idea? Am I the only one think ER have some idealistic and very unrealistic deadlines?

Long post that, Tangled.

As I said, I'm not advocating for XR, and I certainly agree the 2025 target is not achievable.

But allow me to come back on this?

Tangled Metal wrote:Things are happening. What you mean is they're not happening in the way and pace you want.

Things are really not happening. Certainly not remotely in a way consistent with carbon neutrality by 2050.

Quite the opposite: we are continuing to invest in and subsidise infrastructure which locks in a high carbon future. The 2050 "target" is pure rhetoric, with no basis in action.

The UK has done essentially just two things on carbon reduction. Firstly, substitute coal for gas, a road we're now at the end of, and secondly, closer industry and import goods, thereby exporting the emissions associated, mainly to China.

So renewables aren't providing a higher percentage of our national electricity supply for example? As I said it's probably not happening as your want them to or as fast as you want.

Glad you accept 2025 , a key part of ERs policy such as it is, isn't possible. At least you can accept reality. I just wish the ER movement could stick to reality as far as their demands go. I'd probably support them if they did that. Afterall most of us want a viable solution to climate change.

As you can guess I don't like unreasonable demands from any group trying to effectively blackmail others. The shutting down of parts of London for example has a huge cost from many different angles. It's taking limited police resources away from more useful areas of endeavour and generally alienating ordinary people in the process.

It's one thing to highlight issues, GT did it in a pure, simple and honest way getting worldwide notice of her fight. ER is not imho as effective in promoting the message and issues.

Well, I couldn't find it.

If I post content originating from another site, I always post a link, if possible, or failing that, always provide a reference of some sort. You, of course, see fit to do different. Talk about treating this forum, and forummers on it, with contempt...!

[edit]Well I found part of your quote: the words "Jesus Wept" are in here somewhere  , though I'm not going to bother to search further. The rest of your post, on the other hand....

The "inconvenience" of ET protests has not affected me directly, and living out here in the sticks I think that is likely to remain the case. But I wonder if for commuters in London, if disruption becomes a regular thing, ET protests will become like roadworks and Tube strikes, another part of life's daily battle, and a negative thing. Perhaps initial support for ET aims might become strained and the disruption might become self defeating.
