Hi
It's a plain 27.2 (the lip was filed off) it locates the seat so you could at least sit in an emergency

Looking at the Thomson site (I think their collars are better than most) their sizes go up in steps of 1.2mm or more. I reckon I could tell which I needed by measuring carefully with a ruler. 1.2mm difference is very visible.

it crossed my mind yesterday.

bit 3 bears this. 28.6 too small. 31.8 too big. 29.8 juuuust right. i think you were correct there upthread.

Now that I'm home the 27.2mm clamp is a specific accessory clamp, the bike with a larger seat post has a modified seatpost clamp as shown below
