I bet Mick's car gets serviced less often than his bike?

Yes, once a year for service and MOT.
I open the bonnet every now and again just to see if I can remember how it's done.
For no other reason ......... just to see how it's done.

Bikes OTOH, need chain and transmission cleaning and lubing. Maybe every 100miles or much less depending on the weather.
My bike tyres are at - depending on which bike - have pressures up to 120psi, which need topping up every day or three.
The car's tyres rarely need checking, and even less often putting any air into them.

Modern cars are a dream to maintain.
Bikes are a constant and frequent effort.

If available would a 'look at it once a year bike' tick all the boxes?

For me it's something in between.
When trying to track down a noise I'd like a bike that needs very little maintenance, other jobs I quite enjoy.

Yes, I enjoy the tinkering and fettling.
A bike is a finely tuned instrument. It needs tuning to keep it on song. Neglect it, and it goes "off tune" and becomes less efficient.

Cars in the old days needed constant fettling. Go back far enough with them and it was a constant battle to keep them running at all.
These days, cars are reliable and you don't have to think about them, but just keep the bodywork clean.

Not far, I grant you, but tyres only last 1,500miles perhaps, so they should be one tenth worn.

Is the rear tyre wider than the front, or is it an optical illusion?

Optical I reckon.
Rear has 100psi and front 80psi but I doubt that's an issue for width.

180 miles now on a pair fitted to Thunderbird 2 (Moulton APB with alfine 11).
Really impressed with them so far. They seem quick, grippy and hardwearing. Been using on mixed surfaces between tarmac and unsealed railway paths

Seriously thinking about buying more to chuck in the cupboard as they are so cheap and decent.

As I said, I wish I'd bought six instead of four.

Mine are going great. Done some off-road with Moulton a few times on the local trails, and some of it is rocky and loose stones. Moulton will bog down in soft stuff as it has small wheels, but on hard rough stuff it copes well ............... and so do the Nutrak tyres.

Done nearly 500miles on them. Still look good.
Very pleased indeed.

Just trying to add up the mileages.
Say 1,500miles out of the rear tyre minimum. The fronts will last three times that I reckon.
I have four of them ......... that is two brand new spare on the shelf and two fitted.

In 1,000miles time, I'll have worn the rear out as I've already done 500miles on it.
At the rate I ride now, which is far less then I used to, it'll be Christmas or even January before I get to 1,000miles from now.

So, as the front tyre will be fine, the rear one will be replaced. January 2022, I'll be fitting the second spare onto the rear, and by time I've done another 1,500miles, the front will need replacing. Could be summer of 2022.

Will I still be riding the infernal machine then?
Will I still be riding ANYTHING?

Still tempted to buy another two.
You never know, I could get a horrendous visit from the fairy, and need a new tyre.

Freewheel are free postage over £30, so I may see what else they do to make up an order.

My Freewheel order arrived this very afternoon.
Two Nutrak 406/28 tyres at £3.99 each ................. wow! marvellous price!
Gear Up Grandstand single bike floor stand and a puncture outfit to make the order up to more than thirty quid for free postage.
Bill came to £31.62 ......... and it was the puncture outfit that took it over the thirty quid. I didn't need one, but it was worth less than the postage would have been.

Floor stand seems ok and what I needed.

Fitted the two Nutrak tyres to Moulton on 26 Feb, and to date, they have done 736miles. Usually, that's about half-way through a rear tyre's life on my Moulton.

Not swapped them round, and no problems, and only had the pressures topped up. 100psi rear and 80psi front.

Moulton upside down, and I photographed the tyres.
The front seems absolutely fine, as usual.
Rear one obviously showing signs of wear ....... half way through its life perhaps ............. but I think it'll last longer than that.

May swap them over soon, or not bother as I still have three brand new spares!

I'd be interesting if you could measure the thickness of tread on the rear tyre with a new one to compare wear rate,you'd need a micrometer though.

You mean the thickness of the carcass?

I have a 1" imperial micrometer, but I don't know if the tyre would go into the "well" of the micrometer.
I'll have a go with a new tyre to see if it's possible.
