At the moment, every day I pedal my exercise bike for twenty minutes dressed only in my boxer shorts and listening to Eric Clapton using my Echo buds. My question is......is this safe or am I placing myself at risk? I would be very grateful for any informed advice. Thank you.

I would say carry on, unless you feel ill. It’s important to keep yourself fit and active into old age and you are doing this. Being fit, will better enable your body to fight infection and recover. I have a doctor friend who recently sent me this:

Listening to old rock music played by foolish pop idols is always a risk. It induces over-excitement and delusional self-imagining. Why not acquire some Mahler or even a tranche of Ravel? If it's the guitar that attracts your ear, try Jason Vieaux or Victor Villadangos.

Of course the sight of an 80 year old furious pedaller in nowt but boxing shorts may put any ladywoman of a certain age at risk - at risk from what must remain moot.

You are fine with Eric Clapton, Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, Queen, Beatles, the Penguin Café Orchestra, Bob Marley, Madness, Katherine Jenkins and the Beach Boys.

Avoid if possible the Rolling Stones, any punk rock band and Russel Watson

Oh, and supplement the boxers with a sweatshirt ...

On a general point: Those locked-down at home - do exercise.

I've been somewhat static for the last 6 weeks (suffering from something caught on my travels) and not done much exercise. Today I had to use the bike - a short flat ride and it exhausted me!

"Use it or lose it" is very true as you get older. And I expect getting it back gets harder the older you are.

I had to have 4 months off the bike a couple of years ago. I thought I was keeping fit by walking, but first ride back I was wiped out after 18 miles at 12mph average, and my wife dropped me up every little rise.

George, I think we need a video of your exercise regime, just to make sure you are not at risk from the same awful fate as Ian.....

It can be indescribably painful to get various parts of your anatomy caught, either on some wayward travels or on any other piece of domestic equipment which happens to be left lying around; so I think that to properly judge your safety, we really do need that video.

(Seriously, keep it up....you are an inspiration!)

Sticking to Eric Clapton all the time is definitely a risk. Vary the music a bit, and you'l be fine

I just want to say that I'm heartened by these replies.....sniff.

It is true that my blinds have to be tightly closed when I do this......my sheltered flat is surrounded by elderly widows so heaven knows what consequences could ensue if they ever got a glimpse......though just now and then I do like to guess.

I ask you? A life-long cyclist reduced to this......it's not right....dear me no.
