New e-bike : Basis Beacon : problems encountered

Post by Depressed »

At the end of last year, I decided to buy myself an E Bike. I have physical and mental health problems and realised I needed to get out more.
After a lot of thought (obviously not enough) I decided to buy a Basis Beacon from E Bikes Direct !

The electrics on this bike are shocking and not fit for purpose! From day one they have been absolute rubbish and I can hardly go a hundred yards without it packing up! At the moment the bike is sat there gathering dust...and so am I! Thereby, not conducive to physical or mental wellbeing!

I was wondering if anyone else had purchased a bike from E Bikes Direct - and whether they were able to get subsequent problems rectified.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

You should say what sort of bike; and the exact issues/symptoms.
The major problem is probably there, even if E Bikes Direct have been poor on chasing up the issues for you.

If you post a question on https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/forums ... cussion.2/
giving details of the bike and the exact symptoms there may well be lots of advice that can get it fixed quite quickly.
There are quite a few bikes around that are generally good but have a few known weak points;
unless its a very obscure bike somebody on that forum is likely to know.

Thanks for the reply. I tried to get on pedelecs site but the silly question in registration, 'what other name does an electric bike have' does not let me pass, whatever I put in!

At a wild guess, the answer is probably in the name of the site?

Did you try pedelec?

I did indeed put in pedelec...nothing!

I don't suppose somebody could copy/paste my problem to that site and let me know!

If Heaven existed, anyone who did that would surely go there! :D

I just re-registered (different id) using 'pedelec' ... after failing a few times with 'pedalec'.
I wouldn't bother to follow up on the confirmation email; but should work for you with luck.

(For the technical I checked the code for the form: pattern="^pedelec|Pedelec|Pedelecs|pedelecs$")

~~~
If you still have problems registering then please post more here about exactly what the issues/symptoms are and I'll copy your post to there.
(I see you had clearly stated it was a Basis Beacon both in the title and the post, but I had somehow missed it.)
Thanks again to all who helped me.
Hopefully, there will be people who can help me breeze through my problems.
Still don't understand why that silly question is on that site. Still, there are more things in heaven and earth seemingly!
My problem being...I added an s. :roll:
Very suprised by your problems with Basis beacon have you contactacted E bikes direct ?,
I have been riding my Basis beacon almost daily for 11 months and I am delighted with it I have
had no problems at all other than a couple of punctures, Personaly I think they are a bargain.
I too purchased one of these bikes, worked well for almost 2 years when the electronics packed up. EBikes direct were no help, excuse after excuse and the problem is there is virtually no support available, I tried over 20 shops, none would examine the bike, many quoting cheap Chinese components, and even Decathlon who act as distributor for Ebikes Direct would not touch it. In the end I had to throw it away along with over a grand of my cash. Worst purchase ever and amongst the worst customer service I have ever encountered.
I foresee a lot of ebikes ending up being scrapped. No parts and bike shops not seeing any profit sorting it out.
How very true - an ebike is very much more complex than an un-assisted bike to get repaired/repair yourself and thus consumers (of e-bikes) can find themselves between a rock and a hard place in that for those who do not have the technical knowledge to resolve ebike problems are either faced with paying several £1000's for a 'high end' machine from a dealer network (and even then out of warranty repairs can be costly, e.g. Bosch batteries £500+), or something of a more modest price, say around £1k but with nil to poor customer support and local bike shops don't want to know (very good reasons of course)
The route I took was to join the uk pedelec forum and learn about these things and then go the 'kit' route* that is so much cheaper and uses generic parts that are easily repaired or replaced. However, not everyone has the inclination to fettle so as I said 'between a rock and a hard place'.
* my first ebike kit allowed me to converted a beloved Dawes Galaxy to electric for around £400 and when that frame died from rust, I got a used frame for around £120 and was back on the road again. There are now three such kits in our household and I've even got spares to swap out in case of problems (which are few and far between and easy to resolve anyway with the help of the pedelecs forum).
Without my stoker, every trip would only be half a journey
.
i ended up doing a similar thing. I did buy an ebike but sent it back.
For a third of the cost I bought a Tongshen kit and fitted it to a much travelled spare bike. Never regretted it and if it fails there are plenty of spare parts and tutorials on how to fix it.
If all else fails I'll scrap the motor, which no doubt will be recycled.
I'm just heading into my third winter as a cyclist (daily commute of 8 miles + shopping trips and occasional pleasure trips) and my DIY Bafang mid drive conversion has been faultless in that time. I've covered just over 5000 miles and other than brake blocks and chains it has been reliable. I can only remember one issue which was due to a puncture.
It's saved me a fortune compared to running a car, plus I've never been fitter.
