Are you?

His latest tweet:

"I'm not tone deaf. Lots of folk have objected to my earlier tweet. It was a bit clumsy and preachy. I see there is nuance and context to peoples' circumstances. I think all I'm urging is the instant realisation that each and every action has to be very careful thought through"

I’m not a virologist, but then I’m also not the one offering unqualified advice on social media...

Then non-virologist, you can take or leave his advice. Seems to me like he's trying to do the right thing with the information at hand and then adjusted his approach in a sensitive and humble manner. On social media.

In tonight's announcement, BJ has said specifically that cycling (along with walking & running) is OK provided done alone or with a family member, and only once a day.

Yes - brilliant news and eminently sensible in my opinion.

Covid-19 Lockdown-ish : Will you still cycle ?

Post by ossie »

In view of the PM''s advice tonight and being a cycling forum do you intend to cycle as your once a day. Do they know how far and long some of us can spend out there ?

If so how far and what is acceptable?

On the road bike I do 30/50 miles three times a week..sometimes up to 70 - I could actually lose myself in the sticks sometimes,

Will I be seen as a pariah ? How will people view us in our various forms be it lycra'd up or whatever ?

I'll be out riding most days, usually mornings.
I'll also be out walking the doggie, usually afternoons.

PM said exercise, and he included walking and cycling in his statement.

30miles on the bike for me tomorrow - back for lunch ............... and maybe two miles with the doggie later.

Not sure that's in the advice, Mick. They are saying one walk, run, cycle per day - not one of each.

I think that's reasonable and we should stick to it. I was dreading a complete ban on unnecessary outdoor activity as in Spain. At least we can get outdoors once a day. Let's be thankful for that.

I reckon dog walkers are the biggest spreaders.

When you go for a run/cycle you're pretty much on your own, give others a wide berth.

Dog walkers seem incapable of passing each other without stopping to chat (and blocking the path with their mutts running back and forth on their daft long leads).

I thought he said "one form of exercise"
Surely that means if we go for a cycle in the morning we have to cycle in the afternoon too. You can’t go for a walk in the afternoon as that’s a different form of exercise. :|

Yes. For exercise in very quiet local lanes and to go shopping. For the shopping it's a 10 mile journey each way with a total of 2200 feet of climbing so quite decent. And I'm keeping my distance whatever!

As I posted elsewhere the data shows it's essential to mimic China & South Korea to have any decent effect. See my google slide (updated daily)...

Yes. Tomorrow will be 10 miles bike to do main weekly shop. If I have no other need to go out, I'm likely to do a 1 hour loop most weekdays, maybe longer weekends. There's several quiet ones around here. If I shop or visit the pharmacy, I'll probably not go out again.

I'm reading it as yes, one ride per day within the rules. But I suspect the couple of abusive words I got today from motorists will increase. Put the panniers on and combine essential (it is, I have not hoarded) food shopping with exercise. Glad I've got a basic turbo trainer.
