That was my exact intention, when Spain extended the lockdown and I knew then that some other kind of exercise would have to be found. When I bought the villa, the previous owners left me loads of things including a small stepper, virtually brand new. Eight years ago, before I brought a bike over here, I worked up to 1837 steps in 40 mins. Unfortunately, after years of not being used, I threw it away about 18 months ago. When I decided to use the stool I realized it was a little higher than ideal, but expected, in my ignorance, to start at a level of several hundred step-ups and build up from there. I actually managed 50 before my legs decided to go on strike and it made me realize that there was something radically different between pushing a pedal down and the stepping exercise. I'd been doing the normal 14 miles in the hour before the first three weeks of lockdown so have I really lost all my fitness after just three weeks rest or is it that the step-ups are a lot harder than I imagined?
Mail order over here is very slow with most larger/heavier items coming through Gran Canaria from the mainland. Deliveries from UK can take three weeks and then you have to pick them up from the Post Office which isn't now allowed. All non essential shops are shut, there is an almost total absence of pedestrians and vehicles on the streets, unlike UK we are strictly policed with large fines if you disobey.
I'm now up to 90 step-ups but have no idea what that level equates to on the bike. I'll just have to carry on improving and hope, eventually when things return to normal, that I've done enough to keep my fitness level up.
Cheers... Alex
