Reynolds solitude wheel build.
Reynolds solitude wheel build.
I've just brought some Reynolds solitude rims for some lockdown wheel building.
Hoping to build into some lightweight wheels
Novotec hubs seem fairly decent hubs.
Spokes tbc probably DB 2.0 / 1.5 / 2.0 radial front, 2x rear.
Does anyone know the erd of these rims?
Any thoughts
Have a neighbour who builds wheels - he works at the local bike library.
Cheers James

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
some comments
1) rims vary; you are best off measuring yours when you get them, and then ordering spokes.
2) not every hub will be happy if you build it radially; the flanges are more highly loaded in a radial build, so check with the hub manufacturer first.
3) you might be disappointed when you work out how much lighter radial spoking is than x3.
Part of the art of wheelbuilding is to be able to specify components that meet someone's requirements. A good wheelbuilder will take into account the way someone rides the bike, the conditions of use, and the expectations of the wheelset. Often this means they will turn some customers away, because they want some unsuitable combination of parts for a purpose they are not fit for. So do make sure your expectations are realistic.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
Hi James - I'm not clear from your question whether you've built any wheels before. If not then I wouldn't recommend those spokes for a first attempt as it's harder to ensure there's no wind (rhymes with 'rhyme') in them. I would recommend having a go at wheel building in general though. Just take satisfaction in building regular wheels well.
Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
No I haven't hence I'm going to get a mate round the corner to help. I will do the rigging up and get him to finish off.
Will do the radial front first.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
In which case so long as those wheels are suitable for you and your intended use (as per Brucey's comments) all should be well. It does feel like you've entered a race planning to climb off a mile from the finish though
As for the hubs it's going to be difficult for anyone to comment as they appear to be devoid of a model number. I have no experience of Novatec hubs but understand that some are very well regarded. I believe they also make many OEM hubs under many other names so presumably the quality could vary significantly between models.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
I've wanted to build a pair of wheels.
But not plain Jane training wheels - I have 3 pairs of. 2x Alex on tiagra and 1 pair no brand..
+ 3x pairs Shimano factory wheels so I wanted something different.
Has anyone build up deep section alloy or carbon rims? What were the issues?
Cheers James

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
Fair comments and you are presumably also constrained by having bought the rims already. Plain Jane's are naturally the best place to start and once you have a few under your belt you typically find cycling mates who would like similar builds or rebuilds for even more experience. Is there any potential in building something for the 'bike library' (sorry, not sure I fully understand what that is) that your mate could check over before it was released? Allowing you to progress into the more delicate structures that you have planned?
Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
if you are going to push the boat out, you arguably may as well go for an aero spoke, like the sapim CX-ray. They are arguably less easy to build with than standard DB, because not only is the centre section even more prone to wind-up, but it matters more too. They ain't cheap though, and this puts extra pressure on the accuracy of your measurements!

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
I’d have though that at least with the radial front wheel, the lacing pattern is pretty simple.
I’ve stuck with Miche Primato 32h hubs because they look nice, are available, at a price I am happy to pay and are referenced on the EDD spoke calculator. I’ve used Sapim Race, with Sapim Strong on the RDS. I guess I’ve kept it pretty conservative and so far no disasters - Wheel builders sound like they get requests for all sorts of exotic/non-viable/go-fast combinations. Some of the websites do go on a bit.
There’s a lot to be said for doing a pair of plain Janes, if that’s what we’re calling a standard 3x build. See if you can box your
Valve hole and view the labelling on the hub when you look through the hole. Hit and miss, me.
My first pair (of three so far) were deep section, no particular issues, just that you need to slip each nipple into place using a very small size Allen key or similar.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
Going to practice on a 36h front wheel 3x which has rough bearings so going to replace with identical 105 hub.
Have brought these hubs for the Reynolds build.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
Having brought the above hubs I've been reading the weight weenies wheel building mega thread, only to find the front hub I have brought has parallel spoke holes which they suggested would be an issue?
Will it be an issue for a radially spoked front wheel?

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
the front hub looks conventionally drilled to me, which will be fine with conventional J-bend spokes. Heads out is normal for this type of build with radial spoking.
However looking at the photos of the hubs in the ebay listing, it would seem that you are missing the rubber dustcaps from the front hub.

If they are sealed bearings will indeed them for summer riding?
Thanks for the reassurance.

Re: Reynolds solitude wheel build.
the hubs in the ebay listing look like cartridge bearings at the back and cup and cone type at the front. It looks like there are dust shields to me, which is better than nothing I suppose.
