Nice new wheels for my hybrid / 29 er

Post by Marcus Aurelius »

I treated my Hybrid / 29er to a new pair of Carbon hoops.

Mavic XA Elite Carbons. They are super light, the only issue is that they are 15mm thru axle hubs, so I’ve had to get adaptors to bring them down to QRs. I look forward to getting out and test riding them.

Christ alive, this has not been a simple job. I bought some tubeless Hutchinsons to go with the wheels, they were ( surprisingly ) child’s play to fit. I had to blast them into seat position with CO2, but they went on without any fight at all. Then it went a bit Pete Tong. The front wheel was a straight fit, with a 15mm to QR adaptor, no problem. The rear however, was a bloody 12mm thru axle. I could not find anyone who did a 12mm to QR adaptor. Unbelievably, it was Halfords to the rescue. They had 12mm to QR adaptors in stock ready to ship, however it will be a slight bodge ( I’m good at bodges ) as the adaptors are just for the apertures, they haven’t got a shell. I don’t think it’ll matter as it’s the apertures that are important. The wheels and tyres are superb, it would be a shame to have to run the front only on this bike, it’s a good excuse to add a new 29er (under n+1 rules) though.

Please post some pics of the adaptor parts if you can. I'd be interested to see how these work.

That’s the 15mm to QR, it just slots straight into the hub, and fits perfectly. I’m waiting on delivery of the 12mm adaptor.
