Of course, the extra weight of a helmet on your head could be the last straw that tips you over the edge

I don't know if anyone ever watches "Seaside Rescue". Just recently they showed a young guy being rescued after his motor boat ran out of fuel at night, without lights, and after he'd been drinking. Clearly a silly guy. But hearing the Coastguard ticking him off because he wasn't wearing a lifejacket was just ridiculous.

I started wearing a helmet when I started riding to work regularly, after getting rid of a second car. Only major accident I've had, knocked off at a local roundabout in slow speed impact, helmet definitely saved me a nasty crack on the back of the head. Helmet fractured, but not even a headache. That's the sort of thing that convinces you that a helmet is a good idea. I wouldn't expect much protection in a head-on crash off a steep hill into a tree or a vehicle in front, supposing the brakes failed or a similar emergency.
Anyone remember the Boardman crash into a stone wall when the TdF went to Ireland? I think he had concussion and a knock out, but the helmet, even in those extreme circumstances, did prevent major cranial injuries, ie a smashed skull.
This argument/discussion has gone on for years, ever since the first lump of polystyrene was strapped to the first experimental cyclist's noggin, and will never end. What we DON'T want, surely, is compulsory helmet wearing. If that came in I think I might become a rebel and stop wearing the lid, too much interference in our lives as it is by government determined to do us good ( as they see it ) whether we will or no.

I think it would be a good idea if chaps started to wear a cricket box to protect their helmet while on the bike!

Zinzan Brooke fell as he was getting out of a Taxi 2 years ago in Spain, sustaining a fracture of the base of his Skull and a permanent brain injury.
It's just that sort of story that convinces me helmets for car occupants and pedestrians would be a good idea....or is it just meaninglessly anecdotal?

Anecdote is only valid if it is of the "Helmet saved my life" variety - other anecdotal evidence is unacceptable.

"(A) correspondent suggested cyclists should install baskets on their bikes with a cat inside. "Or better yet, wear an oversized helmet with a trap-door with a stealth cat inside."
Is there patent pending on that?

That is 'old hat"

:-
This protects the bonce (or is alleged to do so, subject to your beliefs etc) and helps you make friends with your would-be aerial attackers. As opposed to helmets generally, which seem to be the quickest way to fall out with people
In the interests of symmetry, I hope he has a perch on each shoulder.

Great this old chestnut, 'Helmet wearing' I don't care either way as it gives me a chance to mention my catlike whisper:
So you guys slog it out on a debate that'll run and run, (wars have been started over less), If you want to wear a helmet then do, if you don't want to wear one, then don't! why have you got to justify your decision and try and convince people to follow suit! Me? I'm going out for a cycle...............!
