Dynamo Wheel...

Post by hjd10 »

Hi,

I'm after some advice on a new cheap dynamo wheel, the one I had for my touring bike is being used on my audax bike.
I've been looking around the web, thoughts on the following?

1. ROSE HYBRID - FRONT WHEEL 28"/700C DT SWISS 545D DISC / SHIMANO DEORE DH-3D37 DISC HUB DYNAMO - £77 ish

2. Decathlon - OLYMPIQUE WHEEL CITY 28" FRONT DYNAMO SIX HOLE DISC OR BRAKE PADS,
Shimano DH-3032-QR - £80

3. Ebay - QR 700c wheelsON Front Wheel Shimano Dynamo Nexus DH-3000-3N Black 6v/3w 36H - £65

The Rose one looks good for the money although I can't work out if the spokes are actually SS or not (Spokes: DT Swiss Champion, 2mm, silver)?
Cheers,

Howie

DT Swiss 'champion' spokes are 14G PG stainless steel spokes.

IMHO any wheel you buy, cheap, with a shimano hub dynamo, you should assume that

a) the wheel would benefit from being stress-relieved and
b) the hub would benefit from having the bearings correctly adjusted.

cheers

Thank you,

Could I assume that the Rose wheel looks the best on paper then 2 follwed by 3?
I note your advise on the stress relieving and bearing adjustments.

None of those, consider this https://www.taylor-wheels.com/28inch-bi ... amo-silver because it is a step up in dynamo quality.

Follow the advice about stress relief and adjustment and it should be good for years like mine has been. I also increased the overall tension when I did thae stress relief although it was true prior.

I’ve had plenty of Rosebikes wheels over the years, and they’ve all been very good, especially the 700c dynamo wheel with Shimano 3n80 for £60!

However, alexharvey is correct as the 3n72 dynamo from Taylors Wheels is superior as it is basically same internals as the 3n80dynamo. Good spot.
Raleigh Randonneur 708 (Magura hydraulic brakes); Blue Raleigh Randonneur 708 dynamo; Pearson Compass 631 tourer; Dawes One Down 631 dynamo winter bike;Raleigh Travelogue 708 tourer dynamo; Kona Sutra; Trek 920 disc Sram Force.

the Rose wheel looks the best pick from the OP's shortlist of three.

Alex is quite correct that a 'sport' series hub would (at the same price) be an improvement, but DH-3N72 doesn't take a disc brake, whereas the OP's selections mostly do?

BTW IIRC the 'Nirosta' spokes are a basic stainless steel PG spoke; not in the same league as DT but good enough for a front wheel, given stress relief.

Nirosta means plainly "stainless steel" , not a particular type or grade. It is an achronym derived from three German words: nicht rostender Stahl, non rusting steel. It is often used in German bike lingo to describe "unbranded" stainless steel spokes, otherwise they specify the brand.

It is also the name of a company, formerly owned by ThyssenKrupp, now owned by Outokumpu. They make stainless steel products, presumably including bicycle spokes.

[edit; does 'Nirosta' always appear with capitals? Is it a generic word or a tradename with TM protection, or one that should be like that but has been commonly otherwise used (like Hoover, Dynohub etc in English)?]

cheers

They do seem to sold out of the alfine dynamo disc wheels. Probably worth an email to see if they will be back in stock, otherwise maybe this xt wheel wouldn't be too much of a stretch to the budget.

I bought one of these, for the sports model hub with a disc brake I couldn't find better value, I specifically wanted Centerlock. Did as advised - stress relived wheel, adjusted the hub and all was well until some idiot drove into it three months later. Rim was pringled, but hub and spokes still doing fine - along with the new rim, also used standard nipples as these are built without a slot that need some specific tool. Have a look if you want anything else form them at the same time as the postage is a bit steep, I'm assuming that's included in the £77?
I've also had wheels from Taylors, nothing wrong with them and often cheaper than the UK price for the components. Before I knew any better, I bought a Nexus hub wheel from them, stuck it on a bike, commuted on it for three years (About 6,000 miles) without touching it, then sold the bike. I know it's still doing fine ten years later, though it's use is probably hundreds of miles a year rather than thousands.

If you follow that link, the specs seem to say 135 OLD.
A mistake i assume?
Good to hear more good reports of Taylor Wheels - after recommendations on here I bought a (non dynamo) wheelset from them.
Very happy with it.

Thanks for all the advice, the XT one is more money than I really want to pay. The Taylor wheel whilst is a great spec is the wrong colour and the disc option will suit the touring bike. My audax bike is a rim brake which I’m using a SP copy (supernova disc hub with a conventional rim), whilst the tourer is disc only. I don’t really want to buy from abroad but the prices are much better. ☹️ £77 is the all in cost.

Definitely adjust the hub bearings properly when you get the wheel, if you want the bearings to last. The Shimano dynohubs I've purchased (3 now) have all had ridiculously tight cones on receipt.

bear in mind the electrical resistance of the coils/magnets in the hub will make rotation of the axle feel rough anyway, so adjust the bearings by rocking the axle in the hub sideways and feel for a small amount of play, which should be minimal or just removed when the QR is tightened.

So it's got to be black, disc fit? Like this https://www.taylor-wheels.com/28inch-bi ... namo-black

Don't know much about this hub to be honest assume it must be a similar level to the ones you linked to.
