Not sure what 500% booked actually means.

Me neither! I think b1ke's post link (two posts above) explains it better.

I think the trouble is that a lot of people may be thinking camping will be one way to get a holiday.
Combined with probable restrictions on numbers at sites to enable the required physical distancing, I suspect pretty much everywhere will be fully booked almost as soon as bookings are avsilable.
I think it likely that even organisations, such as Camping & Caravanning Club, who would normally guarantee a pitch for a self propelled traveller will be unable to do so & will accept (scarce) advance bookings only.
on 21 May, BBC wrote:Tent pitch booking platform Cool Camping said Sunday was its busiest day since August, Google search interest for campsites is at its highest since September, and retailer Go Outdoors said online camping sales were up 460% last week on a year ago.

You can, of course, do whatever you like. You just need to claim that a) it was for your family and b) you haven't broken the law.

On a walk yesterday I took a walk around the Annanwater services A74M. On the far side of the lakes I came across a lovely level piece of mown grass completely out of sight of the buildings.
Just a tip for anyone cycling route 74 it’s about a five minute walk from the amenities.

Post cummings and with today's statement from durham police on his adventure i find it hard to see how wild camping by a single person could be condemned/prosecuted.
Pretty unlikely that someone would touch a tree you touched within 72 hours. Even if you touched one at all.

If that's an accurate report, Cumbria police have fined people incorrectly. It's leaving one's home without reasonable excuse that is illegal, not staying away overnight. Probably a misreport.

In England that was originally the case, but not since the amended legislation:

and some of those folk, along with many others I think, will be challenging the fines.
the crime of
"staying away from their main home overnight"
who do they think they are kidding?
I will I stress maintain social distance.
But will plead need to get out for reasons of mental health.
I have twice* shouted at the TV in recent days - and with my french windows open. May have alarmed neighbours and folk in flats opposite.
* Once during Boris's infamous sunday press conference and once during today's - which can hardly be called a conference since journalists and health experts were silenced.
In a bivi of course it's unlikely that I will be accosted by police.
Undermanned as they are.
And in this country mostly relying on consent.
Consent our "betters" have trashed.
