I was very late learning to swim.
My instructor assured me that if I just hung vertical and motionless in the water the top of my head would be above the surface. It seemed to me that this would not help me get air into my lungs!

Hi,
Well yes I have always thought this to be the case and that's normally what people say in this instance isn't it.
Whether we naturally have higher bone density or not I do not know, Or whether or not you can change this with what you do in your life I don't know you can certainly the latter.
I've never broken any bones either but have plenty of spills.

BUT, I learned to swim in about 3ft of water by doing just that, with a mask and snorkel. I wasn't trying to keep my face out of the water, but I was moving arms and legs to move around, and doing that you soon realise sinking is difficult and lifting your face out of the water only involves a little extra effort.

Yes, I know. I can now swim. I was mocking my own fear of the water.

Annoying old people at check-outs

Has anyone noticed these silly old idiots - mostly cyclists - who wait until all their huge-load of shopping has finished being scanned at the checkout before starting to bag it up? Then they look surprised when they discover they're going to have to pay, and spend the next 20 minutes methodically digging out their purses/wallets and going through each compartment to find loose change and vouchers.

Old people delaying you is nature's way of testing your humanity.

You said 'most'. I'm curious - which people are 'BAMEs' not as English/British as..?

I think you are getting your legal scalpel and microscope out there and forensically looking for something to find fault with. The tone was of someone who does not think ethnicity gets in the way of being British, English or whatever.

Nothing wrong with asking for clarity.

You must have a lot of elderly cyclists using your supermarket.
I suppose that I qualify as a " silly old idiot" - but I don't have a problem keeping up with check out operator in loading my bags - (as often as not I use the self service check out).
If I'm bulk buying I drive anyway.
It doesn't take me 20mins to pay either.
I suspect you must be a very impatient person and prejudiced against the elderly.

I’ve been reading this with vested interest. My wife is what is now considered BAME.White mother, father is mixed race. She hates both terms BAME and mixed-race.She has always referred to herself as half caste.Apparently this is now frowned upon. When she was growing you were coloured or half caste. Our children are always telling us off for being un PC!
Maybe if all the labels were dropped and the arguments stopped then no new badge would be needed.
Regarding the bikes isn’t it just a case of a trend. It might look odd to us oldies but a BMX for instance is one size fits all with a low saddle and high bars, these bikes are just kids being kids .We cobbled together whatever we could back in the 70s and ended up with some very odd looking contraptions!
At the very least they are on a bike and not sat in front of a play station.
