Front and Rear Derailleur needed

Post by Spies »

I was duped by an eBay seller with shoddy knockoffs/poorly refurbished shimano parts.

So which sites have genuine shimano parts and what should I be buying for a 3x6 gearset?

The FD is top pull, the large cog looks like 42t, the rear freewheel is a 14-28t.

To be used with TX30 shifters.

Thanks

Buy cheap, buy twice? You may be thinking that because 'it is only a bike' the parts ought to be simple and cheap to buy. Sometimes they are, but more often they are not.

If you can't just read the model number off the old one, you might be best off going to a LBS for the front mech. The reason I say this is that there are about twelve things that determine whether a FD will fit/work correctly, and you might explore endless variations before you stumble blindly on the right one by accident. Rear derailleurs are simple by comparison. In this case almost any shimano RD up to 9s will be index compatible with 6s indexing, it is mainly a question of the overall capacity and whether it bolts onto your bike or not; cheaper bikes often need a little hanger bracket on the mech and better mechs don't have it because the mounting is built into the frame.

cheers

I got another rear derailleur, a shimano tourney tz500 and it seems to work fine compared to the POS the chinese seller sent me.

The front derailleur, I am now able to move over all 3 cogs, but its pretty tough to get to the top one, is that normal?

Does it shift any easier if you unscrew the h limit screw a little? All sorts of set up issues can affect reliable shifting- cable tension, mech height/angle, limit screws etc. Also the front mech needs to be the right model for your setup/chain-line/chainrings size/steps etc, etc. If your chain-line is a little too wide on the front (i.e. The chainset is sitting a little further away from the centre line than ideal) then this can also make it difficult for the front mech to swing out far enough to reliably get big ring. So there are loads of potential causes but an easy first thing to try is the limit screw.

With the H screw turned right out so it's not affecting the movement, it just about manages to get to the largest chain ring on the front, it's like the front derailleur doesn't have enough throw.

It's a 3x6 and the derailleur is meant to be for that.

The derailleur is set perpendicular to the chain set.

Assuming that your cable is clamped to the mech correctly it may be that you need a shorter bottom bracket axle for your chainset to bring it inboard a bit. What gear shifters are you using?

Shimano thumb shifters, just a friction type on the front one.

I've noticed it does seem to shift if I'm on a sensible rear cog, maybe thats just how it is.

Not sure if it's the angle of the photo but it appears the rear mech cage is tilting inwards (towards the wheel) at the bottom, so it's not aligned parallel to the cassette sprockets.

Is the rear mech hanger (the boss on the frame which the rear mech bolts to) bent?
