Fork Steerer extender

Post by climber »

I have a pair of Alpina Carbon forks on my Sabbath Silk Route. The steerer has previusly been cut down and so I want to fit an extender. The external diameter of the steerer is about 28.4mm which would make it 1 1/8". Order a BBB - BHP21. All looks good but the thinner end of this (stated and measured as 25.4mm) won't fit into the steerer. Measuring the steerer gives a diameter (ID) of about 24.5mm - about 1mm too small. Do my forks have an extra thick steerer? They seem to have the correct ED but the ID is too small.
One solution is to fit a BBB - BHP22 as this is just dependent on the ED but IMO it's a bit ugly.
Advice welcome.

Those bbb bhp21 extenders are designed to be inserted into a steel steerer tube, generally to replace a quill stem. They are not meant to be inserted into carbon or aluminium steerer tubes. As mentioned you need one of those ugly external ones where the extender fits over the steerer tube.

Thanks. It is a steel steerer tube and the BBB one quoted is for threadless headsets.
I've since read about the steerer being butted. The upper section that has been removed may have been the ID I need!
Think the ugly one or perhaps changing the stem may be the solution, Trouble is that i need quite a radical rise in height.

That's correct as those extenders enabled the use of a thread less headset on threaded steerer tubes which had a conventional threaded headset.

I have at least 2 sets of forks where any internal extender wont work as the steering column is butted/tapered inside. I even tried to file one extender to fit! Waste of time and probably dodgy anyway.

I've ordered a Humpert external extender fro SJS.
I'd ordered the internal one from Laxzo via Ebay and it arrived very quickly. I've now discovered they do free postage for returns. Original price was good too so I can recommend them. Of course I also recommend SJS!
