The problem is that the film is "better" than reality in many ways and therefore may be better remembered. But that's not good if we remember a false version of history, in which people say or do things that they didn't or, perhaps worse, do things that other people actually did.

Many Hollywood examples of that. Such as that U-boat capture story and a lot of war stories. I'm still waiting for a version of the events around 1066 where William is an American or Aussie (is crowd too old now?) And Harold talks with an exaggerated English accent or possibly a German one just to make sure American audiences know the bad guy. Plus the Harold actor is an American who has never been to UK and actually thinks English do talk with received pronunciation.

I remember reading that most cowboys did not own a gun, their pay was poor and they couldn't afford one. Also the derby hat (what we call a bowler hat) was at least as commonly worn as the archetypal stetson.

Of course many Westerns are about criminals and lawmen - who obviously did carry guns.
