App for tracking position/location
App for tracking position/location
After telling other half I was riding home the long way, (ong way after work is normally 45min ride instead of 30min ride) phone was on silent so didn't hear her calling. I decided to to a 30 mile ride on way home which took just over two hours! Got home to the kids panicking as she had gone out looking for me thinking I had been knocked off the bike. So now need an app which we both can install so she can see where I am when riding. One that can be turned on/off when riding rather than being on all the time.

If you’re on iOS you could use "family sharing" and find my phone
Android I don’t know but you could use Google.

If they have a Google Account
If you haven't already, add their Gmail address to your Google Contacts.
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps and sign in. Learn how to sign in.
Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing and then Add people Add people.
Choose how long you want to share your location.
Tap Select People.
If you’re asked about your contacts, give Google Maps access.
Choose who you want to share with.
Tap Share.
Whatever I am, wherever I am, this is me. This is my life

Don't know anything about any of these, but they're out there...

Some Garmin devices can do this via a compatible phone.

Bit of Google and you can do a live track through whatts app. Can set it for certain amount of time and can turn it off when not riding. Was easy and have tested it out and seems to work OK so am going to use that for now.
Thanks for your help people.

WhatsApp allows you to do this: https://faq.whatsapp.com/android/chats/ ... -location/
For those that don't like sharing with a Facebook app, Telegram seems to do similar, not sure about Signal

Endomondo does ride tracking and can show real-time positions to a remote viewer.

If you are on Android you could use Google location sharing

Re: App for tracking position/location
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I'll be about an hour I told my wife, but two punctures and thinking that she knows my hours may extend elastically and phone on silent (which I didn't know) meant she got extremely concerned when I didn't respond. I've tried two or three Android apps and not wanting to share more data than I have to with Google, Facebook and the like I settled on Glympse as being the most reliable. It will allow sharing with multiple contacts. Now if I spend too long stationary, chatting or just chilling enjoying the view I will get a phone call.
My friends call me the puncture king, having suffered double flats on more than one ride. These days I have puncture resistant liners and gunk filled tubeswhich have worked really well so long stops have been just that for the last 6 months

iPhones.
We know where either of us are. She tracks me walking the doggie or riding the bike, let alone driving the car.
.......... and I can keep an eye on her too.
Excellent system.
Find My app and set up share location.
I know where my computer is and where my iPad is too, let alone my old iPhone if it's switched on.

Sounds like you're under the thumb there Mick F!
Re: App for tracking position/location
It's not that at all.
Back in the old days, I rode JOGLE.
I would phone home at the end of the day, and then before I set out the next day. That was the only contact.
I used phone boxes!
Remember them?
These days, people panic when they leave their mobile phone at home. I wouldn't even contemplate going on even a short ride without mine.
People are constantly in touch with each other these days.
Good thing or not?

Android. Find My Phone app. Approved numbers text my phone a magic word and it replies with my location. No point wasting battery being tracked for no-one just so Google can snoop.

It has benefits, but also means that planning tends to take a back seat... I'll meet you under the clock at 2 doesn't happen any more.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
