Because of this thread, I've charged my Garmin Edge 20, set it to "Auto Pause Off" and got it going.
The thing is still running, and we took it with us going shopping as well as walking the doggie, and it's sitting (the Edge 20, not the dog!) on the coffee table now as I type.

Shows over 6hrs with the battery showing depleting, but more left as yet.
The device is rated at "more than 8hrs" and I reckon it'll just about do it.

The OP is asking how to get the best battery life from their Garmin 800 and you've re-posted your link to a Garmin watch.
Is that the link you intended? I can't make the connection. As I and others have said the big battery consumer on anything with mapping will be the map page itself. You could fiddle with other settings but the really significant saving will be if the map is viewed less.

For recording without displaying any on ride information, I have a cheap logger, about £30 a few years ago. It's the size of a large USB stick and runs for 15 hours. On some long rides, mainly Audax, I use this alongside the Garmin, Using the logger to recoed and the Garmin just for navigation, so I'll turn that off when I'm in a group, or I know the way.

Thanks for pointing that out. Doh!

I rarely use my eTrex these days if I know where I'm going - and I *think* it doesn't upload the rides I've done to Strava (although I may have got that wrong).

Instead I have my Edge 200 model - to record rides only - which I've had for a few years with no bother. I have it set to autopause (because I'd never remember to switch it on again).

Occasionally I'll go belt and braces and use both (so that I can follow a route on my eTrex and record it on the 200). Is it unusual to get 12+ hours out of an Edge 200? Am I fortunate - or have I just not used it enough to tire out the battery...?

Sometimes, but not often.
Walking when I want to record the walk is when I may use it.

The strap is 90deg out for the Edge, but it doesn't matter.
