Post by Tom »

Good afternoon fellow cyclist,

Can you assist please,

Two things, having difficulty finding an outer chain ring for my now obsolete Shimano FC 700 hollow tech 9 speed crank set any Ideas, Number 2, When it is time to replace it what is the nearest 10 speed crank-set to it, presume cassette needs replacement as well,

Spa cycles in Harrogate are pretty good with that sort of thing - may have a TA ring which will be of good quality to replace yours.

I'm not surprised you are having difficulty, not only is it obsolete, it didn't ever exist in the first place.....

You may find your search for chainrings aided if you manage to get the model number correct...?

If you cannot read the model number for some reason, please post photos.

cheers

Okay made an error,
Thank goodness human and slightly Dyslexic,

Shimano XT FC-M770 9 Speed 44-32-22. Toothed Chain rings/ Chain set

Have acquired 32 chain ring and 22 chain ring, having problems with 44 large chain ring.

As they are not available via the Shimano website now, can anyone let me know what crank set will replace the Shimano XT FC-M770 9 Speed chain set please

Thanks

The FC-M770 is 104 mm bcd, 4 arm.
Spa have suitable chainrings from Stronglight (£34) or TA (£42). St John St Cycles will have them too.

don't shoot the messenger here (again....) but the single most useful thing you did was get the chainset model number right. No-one can help you unless you do this (or furnish a photo as suggested). Otherwise it is a bit like dialling the wrong telephone number; very easy to do but very unforgiving in outcome.

not shooting the messenger just explaining why all are fallible some time,I normally get things correct, this may upset things again, but after this discussion i have another question,

I have a folding cycle and have fitted a Shimano 7 speed Nexus hub to rear wheel. I am very pleased with the outcome only problem is gearing is slightly amiss,is there any charts that can assist me to select a larger front chain ring to rectify the situation.

Apologise for lack of detail as in unknown territory.

I find this gearing calculator useful;

http://ritzelrechner.de/?GR=SNI7&KB=45&RZ=18&UF=1510&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=MPH&DV=gearInches&GR2=SNI7&KB2=50&RZ2=18&UF2=1510

it allows you to compare two gearing options, one with another. I have (guessing what you have) preset it for 35-406 tyres and a Nexus 7 hub, and chosen a couple of random chainring and sprocket sizes. But all this and more is adjustable, mostly by dragging and dropping or choosing from drop-down menus. If you make it worse by trying, worry not, you can reload the link above again.

NB in the 'compare' mode if you change the wheel size you need to change it separately in the 'compared' window too; just click on the relevant results panel.

cheers
