Front Mech

I have a Shimano FD LX front derallier on my bike no High/ low indication as on new ones how do I tell, as they can vary,

also what is the modern Shimano equivalent of the FD/ LX

there will be a model number on the LHS of the inner plate. Without that (or a photo) no-one can say anything definitive because there are at least a dozen different 'LX' FD models.

Although there is one thing; with the cable slack moving one screw will move the derailleur, and the other one won't. The one that will is the L screw.

Have found the model no of my Shimano front mech and rear.


Front mech FD LXM581

Rear Lx M580 sgs 9 speed

The FD-M581 does have H/L lettering in the plastic part the screws go into (part: Y5J098030), but it's black like a lot of them are, shine a torch on it Tom and I'm sure the lettering will be there.

regarding an equivalent to FD-M581, if you look at the 2004-2005 specifications here

on p10 you will see several different versions which differ mainly in terms of the relevant chainstay angle.

Sourcing an exact replacement FD is often very tricky. It is nearly always easiest to try and fettle the one you have, if it is the correct one.
