Yo, With the state of things in this country surely Chris Rea's "Road to hell" is the obvious choice!

I see that Johnson says we shouldn't be cringingly embarrassed about the past. The thing that cringingly embarrassed me is to see the wild haired windmilling armed blonde one and realise that he is our prime minister.
Funny how Johnson is invisible when the real issues need spoken of, like an CV-19 or exams fiasco or Russian penetration of our society. But when it's about a jingoistic 19C song which isn't even being banned he:s at his loudest.

Where some are embarrassed and apologetic,BJ swells with pride like a semi-house-trained trump.

This country is just a dim eight-year-old, constantly in a tantrum, being distracted by the same penny-behind-the-ear magic trick and forgetting anything bad ever happened. Frankly, we deserve a manufactured Proms controversy every year until the sun explodes out of the sky
Sums up perfectly this ludicrous attempt to stoke controversy and faux victimhood.

At one point a group of my German friends were sort of apologising to me over the Nazis. I was shocked, none of them was old enough to have lived in that era and I thought it was totally unecessary. The company that I had links with was located in a small village near Dachau. I made dozens of visits there and often stayed in a small hotel near Dachau railway station. I never visited the camp and I would never visit Auschwitz either. My opinion is that although I have many Jewish relations those camps should be raised to the ground.
Thee are obvious reasons not to sing the anthems right now. That twerp Boris should just shut up and let it go. There is enough poisonous rhetoric aand victimhood around presently to last a lifetime. What are we becoming, it reminds me of creeping 1984?

I suspect that the Last Night of the Proms is a big earner for the BBC in the form of international sales and I also suspect that the interest among viewers abroad is the portrayal of Brits as chauvinists stuck in an earlier age.

Sounds fairly accurate.

Chauvin was a Frenchman. Fairly predictable response...
Around the world I have met many people and almost to a man and woman they have been very complimentry about the Britian and its people. They know that we are quite proud of our country and patriotic and that we have a chequered history but that doesnt seem to matter. They respect our current values, fairness, compassion, opposition to totalitarianism and curtailment of freedom of expression. On the other hand most of the derogatory comments seem to emanate from a small vocal minority here in our country who think they are the national concience ( which they clearly are not) and insist that we should all be beating ourselves up all the time. It beggars belief...

Me thinks you're labouring the self flagellation point a bit Al. The man doth protest too much? Whatever you're into in private is your own business.

Please provide an example of someone doing this.

No self flagelation here... Very proud of what I have contributed to my country over my career and retirement. You are a master of couched insults and cynicism.
Ruby... look no further than this forum...
